The Best Book I've ever seen (for the beginner)

First of all it took a long time before I could start with my review. Do you know why? I kept on searching for the sixth, seventh (and so on) star to give this book a rate which it deserve!!

I'm an intermediate user of Excel. That means I can solve my daily problems with formulas (not VBA). And sometimes I need some help from the internet. Then I discovered "MrExcel" and not much later "Excelisfun". It was and is amazing to follow them on youtube where they share all their knowledge for free. Bill and Mike THANKS.

If you don't follow them, you don't know what you're missing.

So when the E-book was ready to order I immediately did.

Let's talk about it

There are a lot of reasons to buy this book.

I can say a lot more but want to end with the advice that it is a must to buy this book.

Thanks to this book I understand a lot more of the formulas I already used. And now know a lot more of them.

There's one "disadvantage" for me personally. It's written in English and I'm a user of the Dutch version :)LOL So sometimes I loose some time with the translation of formulas and functions. But that's my problem :) and believe me, it's worth all the time!!

About the Author
Criss Jami (born Christopher James Gilbert) is an American poet, essayist, and existentialist philosopher. He is best known as the author of Healology, Killosophy, Diotima, Battery, Electric Personality, Venus in Arms, and Salomé: In Every Inch In Every Mile. Criss Jami began writing song lyrics at the age of 11. He attended a private school prior to being home-schooled and later transferred to a public school where he often wrote poems and voluntarily submitted them with school assignments. In 2005, Jami moved to Fairfax, Virginia as a philosophy student at George Mason University and became highly influenced by the writings of existentialist philosopher Søren Kierkegaard and theologian C. S. Lewis. Although renowned for his unusual writing style and perception, Jami was not well-received academically. After 5 years in college, he was dismissed. In 2011, he published Salomé: In Every Inch In Every Mile and the following year Venus in Arms. He published Diotima, Battery, Electric Personality in 2013.

About the Author

Arnold J. Heidenheimer is professor of political science at Washington University in St. Louis. He specializes in the comparative study of European and American policies. He is the co-author of Comparative Public Policy and The Development of Welfare States in Europe and America, and editor of Political Corruption.

Michael Johnston is the associate professor of political science at Colgate University. He received his doctorate in political science from Yale University. He is the author of Political Corruption and Public Policy in America and co-editor of Fraud, Waste, and Abuse in Government. He is also currently co-editor of the journal Corruption and Reform.

This is an excellent book that introduces you to the concept of political corruption. All of the readings are topical and most are extremely engaging. The authors offer an overview of the problems of corruption within their sphere. Highly recommended.

As to the other review. Yes, it is a compilation of other works, all of which is original. It's called a textbook.

Standard, Very Good Survey of Current Study Through a Collection of Research Papers

This is a very widely used -- standard -- collection of research papers on the issue of political corruption. It has undergone several revisions as research has progressed and the editors include a "Guide to Articles in Previous Editions of Political Corruption". Pretty impressive, It think.

The most useful thing to note may simply be that this is _the_ standard collection of papers on the topic. A search for "political corruption" on the net, and a review of course syllabi at universities will turn up this book in many (probably almost all) undergraduate seminars on the subject.

Another reviewer complains that you can find all of these papers online for free. That may be true. How many hours of your time is that worth? Fortunately, many professors are wise to the academic book publishing racket and now make a point of compiling PDF collections of course materials. Great. But this publisher has put together a very solid, representative survey of work for a pretty reasonable price. The pricing is in line with comparable collections from other publishers.

Poor product description

Don't misunderstand - these are all fine classic children's books. My problem is that I thought the collection contained ALL Noel Streatfeild "Shoe" books. After all, directly under the title, Oxford Children's Classics (10 book set) is the sole author name: Noel Streatfeild. I was so disappointed when they arrived - it was supposed to be a Christmas present and I wasn't able to give it because the child had already read many of the books in this collection other than the ONE "Shoe" book included in the set. I should have returned it but kept it instead, broke the set up, and am saving it for grandchildren. Please enhance the description to clearly describe the collection as an offering from various authors including, but not solely by, Noel Streatfeild.

A classic and rightly so

Like many, I first read Flambards in the 80s, after seeing the PBS show.

I had in common with Christina a love of horses, dark hair, and plumpness, and I always felt an identification with her. But I also loved the story, and the characters.

Rereading this as an adult, it is very close to as good as I remember. It is a historical fiction that does not make history more beautiful; the "good ol' days" were smelly, socially stratified and cruel as well as romantic and exciting.

I had thought this was just about The Marriage of Figaro of books, in that I could find no mistakes and everything meshed. But rereading as an adult, I found two plot holes that bothered me. (spoiler!) Why was the servant Mary redoing Christina's clothing when Christina was trained as a dressmaker and she knows Mary is overworked? And while it is a big, big part of the story that Will is deeply upset by how the underclasses are treated, he chooses not to help the groom, Dick, when he is fired. Will could just as easily save Dick as he does a seemingly doomed horse, through the resources of the kind, educated, and rich Mr. Dermot, but he doesn't. The only reason, sad to say, is that Dick has to come back and exact revenge.

On the other hand, the revenge is so good, and is used so well to illustrate social mores of the time, and to show Christina's compassion and confusion, it turns out that I would not have the book without that scene.

One thing I love about all of Peyton's writing, is that it feels so real to me, so right there. The time period (1908-WWI) is not one I know a lot about, but the way she describes the sounds, the feel of the air, the scent of the horses and the outdoors, makes me feel as if I am in the time and place she describes. It is beautiful writing and there are certain paragraphs I read again and again just for the luxury of them.

The heart of this book, for me, is Christina's internal monologues. Her trying to make sense of her continually changing surroundings in a time of huge and rapid change is beautifully done and timeless.

About the Author

Carl Albing is currently a Distinguished Visiting Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the U.S. Naval Academy where he is teaching courses on programming languages and on High Performance Computing. Prior to this he was writing software for some of the biggest and fastest computers in the world as a software engineer for Cray, Inc. As an independent consultant, he is comfortable programming with C, Java, bash and much more. Carl is the coauthor of two books, one on Java development on Linux and his latest, the O'Reilly "bash Cookbook". A former software consultant, manager, analyst and programmer with an amazing breadth of software experience, Carl has worked with companies in the US, Canada and Europe. He has worked for large companies and small startups, in technical as well as in managerial and marketing roles. Carl's software projects, past and present, involve the design and development of distributed computing software, medical image processing applications, compilers, medical devices, web-based factory floor automation, and more. Carl's education includes a Ph.D. in Computer Science as well as a B.A. degree in Mathematics and an International MBA. He has spoken at conferences and training seminars in the US, Canada and Europe as well as local high schools and colleges. Carl enjoys speaking at user groups and seminars on Linux, C, Java, and bash topics.

JP Vossen has been working with computers since the early 80s and has been in the IT industry since the early 90s, specializing in Information Security since the late 90s. He's been fascinated with scripting and automation since he first understood what an autoexec.bat was, and was delighted to discover the power and flexibility of bash and GNU on Linux in the mid-90s. He has previously written for Information Security Magazine and SearchSecurity.com, among others. On those few occasion when he's not in front of a computer, he is usually taking something apart, putting something together, or both.

Cameron Newham lives in Perth, Western Australia. After completing a Bachelor of Science majoring in information technology and geography at the University of Western Australia, Cameron joined Universal Defence Systems (later to become Australian Defence Industries) as a software engineer. He has been with ADI for six years, working on various aspects of command and control systems. In his spare time Cameron can be found surfing the Internet, ballroom dancing, or driving his sports car. He also has more than a passing interest in space science, 3D graphics, synthesiser music, and Depeche Mode.

Solutions to problems for bash users of all skill levels

This book covers the GNU Bourne Again Shell, which is a member of the Bourne family of shells that includes the original Bourne shell sh, the Korn shell ksh, and the Public Domain Korn Shell pdksh. This book is for anyone who uses a Unix or Linux system, as well as system administrators who may use several systems on any given day. Thus, there are solutions and useful sections for all levels of users including newcomers. This book is full of recipes for creating scripts and interacting with the shell that will allow you to greatly increase your productivity.

Chapter 1, "Beginning bash" covers what a shell is, why you should care about it, and then the basics of bash including how you get it on your system. The next five chapters are on the basics that you would need when working with any shell - standard I/O, command execution, shell variables, and shell logic and arithmetic. Next there are two chapters on "Intermediate Shell Tools". These chapters' recipes use some utilities that are not part of the shell, but which are so useful that it is hard to imagine using the shell without them, such as "sort" and "grep", for example. Chapter nine features recipes that allow you to find files by case, date, type, size, etc. Chapter 10, "Additional Features for Scripting" has much to do with code reuse, which is something you find even in scripting. Chapter 11, "Working with Dates and Times", seems like it would be very simple, but it's not. This chapter helps you get through the complexities of dealing with different formats for displaying the time and date and converting between various date formats.

Chapter 12, "End-User Tasks As Shell Scripts", shows you a few larger though not large examples of scripts. They are meant to give you useful, real world examples of actual uses of shell scripts beyond just system administration tasks. Chapter 13, "Parsing and Similar Tasks", is about tasks that will be familiar to programmers. It's not necessarily full of more advanced scripts than the other recipes in the book, but if you are not a programmer, these tasks might seem obscure or irrelevant to your use of bash. Topics covered include parsing HTML, setting up a database with MySQL, and both trimming and compressing whitespace. Chapter 14 is on dealing with the security of your shell scripts. Chapters 15 through 19 finish up the book starting with a chapter on advanced scripting that focuses on script portability. Chapter 16 is related to the previous chapter on portability and is concerned with configuring and customizing your bash environment. Chapter 17 is about miscellaneous items that didn't fit well into any other chapter. The subjects include capturing file metadata for recovery, sharing and logging sessions, and unzipping many ZIP files at once. Chapter 18 deals with shortcuts aimed at the limiting factor of many uses of bash - the typing speed of the user and shortcuts that cut down on the amount of typing necessary. The final chapter in the book, "Tips and Traps", deals with the common mistakes that bash users make.

All in all this is a very handy reference for a vast number of the tasks that you'll come across when scripting with the bash shell along with well-commented code. Highly recommended.

Paid for itself in 5 minutes

I had one of those questions today about whether an option exists for a particular built-in command, 'type', and was about to painstakingly page through the bash man page as usual, when I remembered I had just gotten this book. Looked up 'type' in the index, and it referred me to two different pages: one that told me how I can avoid paging through the man page (use the 'help' command!), and one telling me everything I needed to know about using the command (and others like it) in my desired context. I was so happy I kissed it. Yes, I kissed the book.

From a quick thumb-through, I gathered that the rest of the book was just as concise and easy to navigate. Probably not great for complete linux n00bs, but it sure beats the bash man page!!! For anyone who uses the bash shell on a regular basis, whether for scripting or just running unix commands, this is absolutely indispensable. I have no idea how I got through 13+ years of unix programming without it.

Good book about bash. If you are not a bash expert, but you like bash, then read it and your bash skill will be improved.

It shown how to daemonize your scripts and tell about very nice tips.

Maybe after this book, the next should be read about posix shell features.

About the Author

Keith Hamilton is an historian in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. His most recent publication (co-edited with Patrick Salmon) is Slavery, Diplomacy and Empire: Britain and the Suppression of the Slave Trade, 1807-1975 (2009).

Richard Langhorne is Professor of Global Politics at the University of Buckingham and a Full Professor in the Division of Global Affairs at Rutgers University, USA. He was formerly Director of Wilton Park, FCO, (1993-1996) and Director of the Centre of International Studies at Cambridge University (1987-1993).

The words listed herein, most all of which I know or am at least familiar with, are not a part of most people's active vocabulary; including my own. I have tried various paperback vocabulary books, the kind that are quite portable, but find myself fanning the pages instead of being able to quickly snatching a word and using it. The 1001 Words for Success may help me do just that and, by finding the word quickly, perhaps it will find its way into my active vocabulary; I don't know yet. If not, then I may have to try something completely different. Wish me luck.
