Once rearranged to suit English sensibilities, though, those symbols lose their power, meaning, and coherence.

One of the Best Criticisms of Tolkien I Have Ever Read

In twenty some pages E. Michael Jones explicates some of the "failures" almost every reader of Tolkien feels upon reading Tolkien. To me, there was always the feeling, "Yeah, there's something great about this work, but.....am I missing something?" Yes, it turns out I was missing something big time. Jone's contends that Tolkien sought to reset his beloved "Northern Thing" in England to rescue it from the tainted embrace of Wagner. Wagner mined the Northern Thing for his own Ring Trilogy, Wagner was later a darling of the Nazis, Wagner thus tainted the Northern Thing with Antisemitism. Tolkien sought to remove this taint of racism from the Northern Thing by resetting it in England and retelling the mythos. Simultaneously, he would be gifting his beloved England with its' own foundation myth.

Jones argues that in resetting and retelling the Wagnerian mythos in England Tolkien stripped the story of its' deeper meaning. I would (and do) disagree, but the points he makes are cogent and thought provoking. Given the truncated nature of this "book" the insights are arguments contained within outshine (IMHO) volumes written by others. A truly groundbreaking work that led to me returning to reading Tolkien and developing a much deeper appreciation for all of Tolkien's work.

Much as you'd expect from yet another 'voice of the oppressed'

Not sure it matters that the author seems to understand very little about Tolkien when you consider the predictable anti-English tone of his pronouncements elsewhere and the meaningless phrases attributed to him such as 'ethnic Catholics'. Language-abuse is common among Irish-wordshipping American authors and assigning all the ills of the world to 'WASPS' no less so. Serious students of Tolkien or Wagner [axe-grinders excepted] are warned they will find little to interest them here. Do not confuse understanding the Ring with talking through it.

Paul Lomax, author of O'Reilly's VB & VBA in a Nutshell and a coauthor of VBScript in a Nutshell, is an experienced VB programmer with a passion for sharing his knowledge--and his collection of programming tips and techniques gathered from real-world experience.

Matt Childs is a vice president with Integrity Solutions Inc., one of Alaska's leading custom software development companies. Matt is responsible for overseeing all in-house development, and over the past year has worked with the State of Alaska and Alaska's two largest telecommunications companies. Matt has worked in the information technology field for nine years, and has been a VB programmer since Visual Basic 3. During most of his early career, Matt was an information technology manager for a large transportation company, where he developed custom software solutions and systems integration for the company's largest clients. Matt has industry experience with utilities; express transportation; and chemical, petroleum, and retail companies. In the winter, Matt spends his free time with his telescope, and during the long Alaska summer days, he enjoys playing softball and spending time with his family. Matt, his wife LeAndra and their daughter Meghan recently returned to Anchorage, Alaska, after spending some time in the southern United States. Matt is also a fiction writer and a freelance journalist.

Ron Petrusha is an editor for O'Reilly and is the author/coauthor of many books, including VBScript in a Nutshell. Ron has a background in quantitative labor history, specializing in Russian labor history, and holds degrees from the University of Michigan and Columbia University. He began working with computers in the mid 1970s, programming in SPSS (a programmable statistical package) and FORTRAN on the IBM 370 family. Possibly useful book ruined by horrible print quality.

I'm sure that this is a perfectly good reference book for VB Scripting, but the print quality is abysmal. It looks as if it was optically reduced from a larger format, and unfortunately, half the fonts used did not survive the reduction in readable form. Lines in individual characters became so thin that they simply vanished, leaving you trying to guess what each letter actually was.

If this was a novel, that might be almost usable. But a book on programming, where every character counts?

I don't recommend this book!

I was a disappointed with the number of commands that this VBScript Pocket Reference covers. I was taking an introductory class that seemed to delve deeper into the various commands that VBScript has to offer. Unfortunately, this book is not inclusive enough to be useful.
