Review
I was hooked from the opening chapter. The scope of The Atlantis Gene is both enormous and ambitious. It is also confident and assured. --For WinterNights

A compelling novel. A thriller certainly, but one that combines so many factual historical references that the reader is left wondering where facts end and fiction begins. With an unerring sense of drama, the tension ramps up in the final part' --Best Selling Crime Thrillers.

An exciting new voice in the thiller / action genre
By Donald T.
"The Atlantis Gene" is the debut novel by A.G. Riddle. It's a Science Fiction thriller that combines elements of the lost city of Atlantis, human evolution, Nazis, conspiracy, alien technology, and end of the world scenarios.
The very basic premise (without spoiling anything) is that the human race was on the brink of extinction at one point in the past and somehow, for some unexplained reason, humans made a giant leap forward in the evolutionary ladder that allowed them to not only survive, but to take control of planet Earth. Dr. Kate Warner is a researcher and an expert on human evolution. She is living in Jakarta Indonesia studying and seeking a cure for autism. One day while working on a new treatment with a pair of her autistic children, hooded soldiers move in, ransack the facility, and steal the children. Shortly thereafter, agent David Vale shows up on the scene and he and Kate are sucked into a worldwide race against time to save not only themselves and the children, but quite possibly the whole world.
This book was recommended to me by a friend. He raved about it. Told me it was a "must read". After getting through the first half of the book, I found the story to be solid, but nothing necessarily different or special. As a matter of fact, I was a bit disappointed at how similar certain aspects of the plot were to Jeremy Robinson's "Second World" and James Rollins' "Black Order". And when I say similar, I really mean exactly the same. I even called my friend to tell him that I thought the book was average in every way and was a copy of these other books. I pressed on however and fortunately at about the halfway point, Riddle starts to separate his book from the others. The plot thickens, the characters start to develop, and the plot starts to turn.
The last 25% of this book is pretty fantastic. There are twists that I never saw coming, and characters that I thought were token players that emerge near the end to change everything. After spending much of the first half of the book at a jog, Riddle flips the switch towards the end and the pacing becomes very quick, and the action and story become intense. The book ends with a refreshingly satisfying cliffhanger - just the right balance of closure versus setup for the next book.

Riddle's first novel is not perfect. The first half of the book should have been cut down some. There are places where the story drags just a little bit. I'm certain that those are minor issues that Riddle will get worked out as he continues to write. All in all, he has given himself a very solid foundation to build from, and I feel certain that his popularity will only grow after this first very solid effort.

Perfect Mash-up of History and Science!
By Holly Y
This book was written for me, I swear. I just finished it after 3 days of neglecting everything else in my life, and thought, "Finally, the powers that be created a story teller who is capable of writing 500+ pages in which every single word is completely to my tastes."
The history and the theories behind evolution, religion, autism, Atlantis...well I'm a complete sucker for all of that and Riddle played them perfectly. He wove together several different theories and myths that many people wouldn't associate but it's incredibly believable and makes you want to put your thinking cap on and theorize right along with him.
The science portions of the book were incredibly understandable and seemingly accurate. Whether you're a geek or have never watched or read anything "sciency" you'll understand it and it will fascinate you.
The writing style is so swift and yet easy going at the same time. The book moves you right along, yet everything is well explained. There are some funny one-liners in it...just the right amount so that they do read as funny instead of cheesy. The action scenes are actually imagineable, like a little movie in my head (and I swear this book will be a huge movie someday) unlike so many other action books. And there is just the teeny tiniest dash of romance thrown in there so your heart smiles for a mere second but you are not in danger of gagging.
So the book was excellent, I absolutely can't wait for the next one, and I will 100% recommend it to everyone!!

Lacks restraint and development, but there's promise here
By Jonathan Cronin
I'll be honest, the only thing keeping me going with this book was the desire to write an authoritative review of it; to warn others to steer clear. Then, after I was finished, I read the author's note. This is a debut book by an indie author, a guy following his passion, who acknowledges that this is not a perfect book and seeks feedback. And that's part of the reason I picked it up in the first place, I liked the idea of someone with an (overly) ambitious story, bringing it to life and the community (overly) supporting it. So I'm not going to snark out and eviscerate this book as I was planning, but as the author requests, here are my thoughts:

1. Develop the characters and their motivations. This book is filled with throw away one paragraph backstories that are supposed to completely define the character. It's no exaggeration to say that one of the main character's motivation in the plot was derived from a death in 9/11, that might have had 3 paragraphs written to it in the entire book. There's a huge section of the book devoted to a diary substory, where the diary character is actually developed, you care about what's going on. I found myself disappointed when the focus would shift back to the main plot. Put the same effort into the main characters.

2. Pass on some ideas. This book is overly ambitious, it tries to account for every conspiracy theory and wrap it up into a single story. The idea sounds fun on paper, but good grief is it a mess in reality. The Nazi religious artifact missions, human evolutionary theories, Atlantis, 9/11, the cause of historic plagues, ancient shadow groups in an endless battle- it's so much, and so much is not necessary. The 9/11 reference is not explained at all, to the point where it's borderline offensive. There's a point towards the end of the book where a character casually mentions that he accidentally crashed a weather satellite into New Mexico in the 40s. For some reason, they thought we needed a Roswell UFO reference in there too, that served absolutely nothing; it's indicative of a lack of restraint throughout the book.

3. Choose a point of view. There's a scene in this book where two characters are walking down a hallway, and you're constantly jumping between the thoughts of each of them. Who's thinking what? It's confusing, and it also takes away all suspense if you know what all characters are thinking, all of the time. This happens throughout the book, with inner monologues and with plot revelations. You'll meet a character for the first time, and then they'll turn out to be someone else in 5 pages. It's not a twist if you don't string us along for a least a little while; it's kind of like a little kid who can't keep a secret and just blurts it out, it's better to keep it to yourself for a while.

4. Never put immortality on the table. How can I care about life or death situations, when you've introduced immortality to the story? All suspense died the moment we find out that technology exists to heal any injury, and to life for a practically infinite period of time. This is an extension of a greater issue in the book, the inability of the author to let go of characters. I would estimate that half of the characters in the book die or were thought to be dead, only to find out that they now aren't. The death of a character can be powerful emotionally and make me care about what's going on, but if you're constantly jerking me around with 'fake deaths', I'll just assume that nobody ever dies, and be largely correct.

5. Keep writing. This is a labor of love, without a doubt, someone cared about this story when they put it to paper. That was part of the problem, the author was unable to let some of their ideas and characters go. There's technical skill here, the action sequences are largely engaging(if not ridiculous, in one scene the main character shoots down a drone with a sniper rifle before leaping into a hot air balloon, wow). I feel like the environments are well described, and the world that is set up for the sequel (was published this fall), seems intriguing. Unfortunately, my time with the Atlantis Gene series is over with, I won't be reading the sequel. But people love this book on Amazon, and the author has sparks of promise. Keep growing, be discerning, and tell them your story.

Joy of Cooking, by Irma S. Rombauer, Marion Rombauer Becker, Ethan Becker

The bestselling Joy of Cooking—the book Julia Child called “a fundamental resource for any American cook”—now in a revised and updated 75th Anniversary edition, which restores the voice of the original authors and many of the most beloved recipes from past editions and includes quick, healthy recipes for the way we cook today. JOY is a timeless kitchen essential for this generation and the next.

A St. Louis widow named Irma Rombauer took her life savings and self-published a book called The Joy of Cooking in 1931. Her daughter Marion tested recipes and made the illustrations, and they sold their mother-daughter project from Irma's apartment.

Today, nine revisions later, the Joy of Cooking—selected by The New York Public Library as one of the 150 most important and influential books of the twentieth century—has taught tens of millions of people to cook, helped feed and delight millions beyond that, answered countless kitchen and food questions, and averted many a cooking crisis.

Ethan Becker, Marion's son, led the latest version of JOY, still a family affair, into the twenty-first century with the seventy-fifth anniversary edition that draws upon the best of the past while keeping its eye on the way we cook now. It features a rediscovery of the witty, clear voices of Marion Becker and Irma Rombauer, whose first instructions to the cook were “stand facing the stove.” Recently, Ethan’s son, John Becker, and John’s wife, Megan Scott, joined the JOY team, where they oversee the brand’s website (TheJoyKitchen.com) and all social media for JOY. They spearheaded the creation of the bestselling Joy of Cooking app, available for iPhone and iPad.

JOY remains the greatest teaching cookbook ever written. Reference material gives cooks the precise information they need for success. New illustrations focus on techniques, including everything from knife skills to splitting cake layers, setting a table, and making tamales.

The 75th Anniversary edition also brings back the encyclopedic chapter Know Your Ingredients. The chapter that novices and pros alike have consulted for over thirty years has been revised, expanded, and banded, making it a book within a book. Cooking Methods shows cooks how to braise, steam, roast, sauté, and deep-fry effortlessly, while an all-new Nutrition chapter has the latest thinking on healthy eating—as well as a large dose of common sense.

This edition restores the personality of the book, reinstating popular elements such as the grab-bag Brunch, Lunch, and Supper chapter and chapters on frozen desserts, cocktails, beer and wine, canning, salting, smoking, jellies and preserves, pickles and relishes, and freezing foods. Fruit recipes bring these favorite ingredients into all courses of the meal, and there is a new grains chart. There are even recipes kids will enjoy making and eating, such as Chocolate Dipped Bananas, Dyed Easter Eggs, and the ever-popular Pizza.

In addition to hundreds of brand-new recipes, this JOY is filled with many recipes from all previous editions, retested and reinvented for today's tastes.

This is the JOY for how we live now. Knowing that most cooks are sometimes in a hurry to make a meal, the JOY now has many new dishes ready in thirty minutes or less. Slow cooker recipes have been added for the first time. This JOY shares how to save time without losing flavor by using quality convenience foods such as canned stocks and broths, beans, tomatoes, and soups, as well as a wide array of frozen ingredients. Cooking creatively with leftovers emphasizes ease and economy, and casseroles—those simple, satisfying, make-ahead, no-fuss dishes—abound. Especially important to busy households is a new section that teaches how to cook and freeze for a day and eat for a week, in an effort to eat more home-cooked meals, save money, and dine well.

As always, JOY grows with the times: The 75th Anniversary edition of JOY boasts an expanded Vegetables chapter, including instructions on how to cook vegetables in the microwave, and an expanded baking section, Irma's passion—always considered a stand-alone bible within the JOY.

This all-purpose anniversary edition of the Joy of Cooking offers endless choice for virtually every occasion, situation, and need, from a ten-minute stir-fry on a weekday night to Baby Back Ribs and Grilled Corn in the backyard, or a towering Chocolate Layer Cake with Chocolate Fudge Frosting and Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream. JOY will show you the delicious way just as it has done for countless cooks before you.

The span of culinary information is breathtaking and covers everything from boiling eggs (there are two schools of thought) to showstopping, celebratory dishes such as Beef Wellington, Roast Turkey and Bread Stuffing, and Crown Roast of Pork.

Happy Anniversary, JOY! Happy Cooking.

Odes to Joy

"Great cookbooks are not just collections of interesting recipes. They are, first and foremost, books that tell a story, the story of how people lived and cooked at a particular point in time. They reveal, to borrow an expression from James Beard, their delights and prejudices, their view of the social order, their appetite for serving others food that meets the expectations of their social class. Food can be anything and everything from fuel to an object of intellectual curiosity to full-bore hedonism that transports the mind and body far from the dinner table with just one overwhelming bite.

I started cooking out of an early edition of Joy when I was only 7 years old. I remember making a basic chocolate cake with 7-minute frosting. The cake turned out fine, but the frosting resembled gruel and was my introduction to the importance of following a recipe to the letter. Evidently my lack of patience and precision had led me astray. But after that first brush with culinary failure, Joy led me to many, many successes over the years; more to the point, I became enamored of Ms. Rombauer's voice, the matter-of-fact charm that led her to suggest "stand facing the stove" as a sensible first step in any recipe.

The amateur but highly evolved enthusiasm that Irma Rombauer brought to the world of home cooking was a breath of fresh air after the slightly earlier era of culinary dowagers Fannie Farmer, Mrs. Beaton, and Marion Harland. To those pillars of culinary wisdom, recipes were shorthand for cooks who had spent a lifetime in the kitchen. A pie pastry recipe might be written as "make a paste." But Ms. Rombauer was there to hold our hands, to put food in a social context and give it attitude, energy, and meaning in a world where food was leaping past the narrow formality of the Victorian age.

For all of our worldly knowledge about ingredients and culinary custom, few cookbook authors have managed to perfectly capture, without artifice or self-conscious chatter, the vernacular of an age. Irma Rombauer introduced us to a room in our home--the kitchen--that was to become a place of enjoyment, not just one of backbreaking labor. She represented the essence of the new American experience, which suggested that everything in life could be transformed into pleasure with nothing more than the proper attitude. And what better way to celebrate this new age than to have a smashing cocktail party with the perfect hors d’oeuvres?

The original Joy of Cooking was mind over matter, the perfect mix of attitude and function. Even as times have changed, the Joy stands out as a watershed volume, a book that speaks to the very heart of who we want to be in the kitchen: producers of our own story, directors of the good American life.

And, according to Ms. Rombauer, all we have to do is take that first easy step and "stand facing the stove." --Christopher Kimball, founder and editor of Cook's Illustrated

"I'm often asked to pick my favorite cookbook. Considering that there are over 3,000 cookbooks published each year, it's a daunting task to try to narrow them down. Speaking as a chef who never went to cooking school, I've been enthralled by certain cookbooks, immersing myself from cover to cover and learning about exotic cuisines from all over the world. But for just plain basic information, both the original and revised Joy of Cooking are still my bibles. I can't tell you how many times my wife Jackie and I have thumbed through the stained and broken-backed copy of Joy in our home kitchen, looking for our favorite angel food cake recipe, our favorite skillet corn bread, our favorite fluffy biscuits, and crisp waffles, and on and on. It's tough to picture my family table--or, in fact, the American table--without a well-worn copy of Joy of Cooking in the background." " --Tom Douglas, author of I Love Crab Cakes!

"I highly recommend this book as a must-have in your kitchen. Chock full of great information, this book takes all of the guess work out and leaves no stone unturned." --Paula Deen, author of Paula Deen Celebrates!

"In our kitchen, Joy of Cooking is a tool as indispensable as the chef's knife, the scale, the whisk. We actually own two copies--a shelf-copy for reading, and one whose sauce-splattered, dog-eared pages bear witness to just how much joy we get from Joy." " --Matt Lee and Ted Lee, authors of The Lee Bros. Southern Cookbook

"Joy of Cooking is the ultimate reference guide that I have been using for years. It's timeless and packed with perfect recipes for the home cook that stands up to the test of time." --Tyler Florence, author of Tyler's Ultimate

"Joy of Cooking is a book I turn to whenever I have a question about food or cooking. The new edition is the combined effort of some of the best cooks writing today; I know I can trust its information. And trust is, to my mind, the essential quality of all great cookbooks." --Sally Schneider, author of The Improvisational Cook

"When Andrew first contemplated becoming a chef in the 1980s, he asked two Boston chefs of his acquaintance what books he should read. Each independently recommended Joy of Cooking as THE classic with reliable recipes for just about everything. (The second chef urged him to look for an early copy for the sheer entertainment value of reading how to cook a possum.) A decade later, when we interviewed 60 of America’s leading chefs for our first book Becoming a Chef, we asked them the same question--and again Joy was one of their five most recommended books. In fact, we recommend buying two copies, like we did: we keep our chocolate-smudged copy of Joy in our kitchen, and a reading copy on our bookshelves." --Andrew Dorenburg and Karen Page, authors of What to Drink with What You Eat

"Our Joy of Cooking is dog-eared, flour dusted, chocolate smudged, oil spattered, and easily the most used cookbook on the shelf. The staggering amount of information in the book taught us the basics when we were in our teens and has informed our cooking for the decades since. We wish we had written it!" --Johanne Killeen and George Germon, authors of On Top of Spaghetti

"I received a copy of Joy of Cooking in my late teens. I have treasured the cookbook ever since and still use it frequently as a reference. In the late 80's I was asked to represent American Cooking in Italy. I cooked all over the country for 2 months. The only book I took was Joy of Cooking. When ingredients that I had ordered did not show up and I had to totally wing it, I used this book to get me out of a few jams--like what the proportions are to make your own baking powder! If I could have only one cookbook--other than my own of course!--it would be Joy of Cooking–-as it is the bible of American cooking" --Kathy Casey, author of Kathy Casey's Northwest Table

"I have purchased Joy of Cooking for all my restaurant libraries as well as my own. The recipes always work--always--and the informational chapters are accurate, to the point, and incredibly helpful--couldn’t live with out it!!" --Cindy Pawlcyn, author of Big Small Plates

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. They say mother knows best, but in the case of this classic cooking volume, first published 75 years ago, the adage might be more accurately "mother—and grandmother—know best." For while some previous editions of Joy have embraced passing fads and shunned the earlier versions' old-school charm, this time, the editors (led by Irma's grandson and Marion's son, Ethan) have stayed true to the spirit of the original. Fond of its forebear's quirky phrases ("There is nothing simple about these uncomplicated-looking fungi" or "a pig resembles a saint, in that he is more honored after death than during his lifetime"), the new narrative of Joy is one of, well, joy. Its recipes will prompt readers to bound into the kitchen; their range and depth is such that there really is something for everyone. Enchiladas, sushi, bagel chips, smoked brisket and corn dogs make their first appearance, while ice cream, nut butters and beef fondue return after some time away. The use of "we" throughout the text will reassure those skeptical of, say, preparing game (a section that, incidentally, has been expanded), and the overall feeling of the kitchen as a place of empowerment and enrichment makes this an essential work for all cooks. From Booklist
In recognition of the seventy-fifth anniversary of the publication of Joy of Cooking, a new edition of this classic work appears. For this landmark, the editors have returned to Joy's 1975 edition, rejecting the controversial last edition's perceived foray into 1990s chef-driven fads. This change in editorial viewpoint doesn't necessarily signal a narrower vision. This new Joy acknowledges that American tastes have broadened by including a selection of cocktails and basic introductions to beer and wine. Drink recipes range from unassailably classic libations, such as the martini and Fish House Punch, through the current obsession with tequila-based tipples. Canning and jam and jelly making also reappear, reflecting the ubiquity of urban farmers' markets and a return to a food-preservation technique that avoids energy-consumption issues inherent in freezing. That quintessential emblem of middle American cooking, the casserole, finds restoration. Detailed line drawings that gave Joy's earlier editions their distinctive appearance bestow continuity. Whether or not the simultaneous release of a new line of cookware bearing the Joy of Cooking imprimatur compromises the book's integrity remains to be seen, but a list price of $30 marks it as a bargain for the consumer. The new Joy maintains the title's role as backbone for any library's cookery reference collection, its nearly 4,000 recipes defining essential American home cooking. Mark Knoblauch

a classic: two reasons to get this book
By Mayer Goldberg
The Joy of Cooking is by now a classic, a Bible of cooking. An encyclopedic tome of procedures, material and recipes. I shall not attempt to cover its many virtues here, but instead I would like to focus on two reasons why you MUST get this book:
LEARNING TO COOK The Joy of Cooking is more than just a recipe book. It's a textbook. As a student, living on my own and having to take my first steps in the kitchen, this book was a life saver -- it taught me how to cook. Other cookbooks are mere collections of recipes: If you follow them carefully, you have a good chance at ending up with something close to what the author intended. But most cookbooks don't teach you anything about preparing food -- they're just recipes -- so you never really understand, for example, how different doughs are made and how they're used for different breads and pastries, or what kinds of fish should be broiled, fried or cooked, etc. The Joy of Cooking teaches you all that, and much more. If you take the time to actually read the descriptions at the start of each chapter, as opposed to just searching for and following a recipe, you will understand how to cook. The importance of this is immense: If you actually understand what your doing, as opposed to simply following directions, you can improvise, invent new recipes, correct any problems/mistakes/errors, etc. You will begin to think like a Chef. I own many cookbooks, but the Joy of Cooking is one of the very few that actually attempts (and does such a wonderful job) teaching you how to cook. You shouldn't miss up on this opportunity. It's very clear, very well-written, and is ideal for those that are taking their first steps in the kitchen.
RARE AND DIFFICULT TO FIND RECIPES While the Joy of Cooking can't contain each and every ethnic food, it is quite encyclopedic nonetheless. Often, I search dosens of cookbooks, surf the internet, ask friends, only to discover that what I'm looking for is already in the Joy of Cooking! I should have consulted it first! Do you realise that the Joy of Cooking will teach you how to make marshmellows, Halwa, Turkish pastry dough (for borekas), candy, and many other not-so-easy-to-find recipes? And all from scratch: Marshmellows are essentially whipped sugar syrup and gelatin. Halva is essentially sugar syrup and raw tehini sauce. Making Turkish pastry dough is an involved process that takes time and precision -- all the steps for which are in the Joy of Cooking. While I have all these recipes in other books as well, I have no other SINGLE book that contains them all. The Joy of Cooking is encyclopedic and diverse, its scope as far as procedures or ethnic foods are concerned is enormous. This should be your first cookbook, and unless you're looking for some really exotic procedures and recipes, it could very well be your only cookbook.

The 'Bible' turned into microwave cliff notes
By David Knudsen
While I have dozens of cookbooks with exotic recipes, I've always relied on 'Joy' for those basics (like canning, preserving, freezing, substituting) and tips you can't find anywhere else. Sure, the new 'Joy' has discovered the food processor and microwave, but has discarded many of those tried and true basics along the way. If you want to replace your worn out, dog earred old copy, get the regular 'Joy', not the new, 'enhanced' one.

Hardbound versus Spiral bound?
By Suzy Vander Vos
Without going into any long saga, let me just say that if the spiral bound addition had been given to me 23 years ago as a wedding shower gift, it would not be with me here today. The binder does not allow for easy opening of the book, or turning of the pages, and the paper is of inferior quality. It is too thin, too flimsy on the fingers. I do not believe it will last. I just purchased this version for my 19 year old collage student, and want to return it for the hard bound edition. There will always be those who don't approve of change. If some things have been omitted and replaced with others, there are always reasons for such changes even it we don't agree with them. My copy(hardbound) is 23 years old and still going strong. All of my kid's pick it up when they cook, without my influence at all. It is the most important cooking manual on my shelf, and I own hundred's of cookbooks. If the general layout and feeling remain the same, I would only recommend the spiral addition with the proper changes.

Here's a book that shows how to make marmalade out of lemons.
By Shaun Green
Purchased via Amazon.co.uk Mr Bharat Mathur has published a totally unique book, the like of which I have not seen before. The author has taken what may seem like common good advice and do-well proverbs, but used them in such a way as to show you the best intentions behind that advice, in order to lead you towards a more positive attitude and with it a more successful life style.
For example, quoting Mr Royce (of RR fame) "If you can't make it better then redesign it", and what to we get? a Silver Shadow or a Phantom.
There are gently but timely reminders on good business sense to improve your status among your clients ie focus on customers needs (one satisfied customer brings ten, whereas one dissatisfied will take away a hundred). We all know it, but sometimes forget in our rush through life.

My personal favorites are the reminders to "dare to dream", with numerous fascinating examples. I hope the author will forgive me if I quote verbatim, from my own personal hero T. E. Lawrence, aka Lawrence of Arabia, “All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find it a vanity; but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they act their dreams with wide open eyes to make it possible.”

The author's advice will stand up to any scrutiny. Be a giver not a taker and go the extra mile in business, who will argue with this, with excellent examples of how this advice will actually help you if you stop and remind yourself of them. Mr Mathur then moves onto his 12 steps to success which I would strongly advise to read. This is a fascinating book, and the author's description of his own life and success does himself proud without for a moment seeming to brag. Described only as demonstrations of his advice in practice of which I most whole heatedly agree. A wonderful book Mr Mathur.
A reminder to self: Life is not a fierce competition where you must defeat all others in order to succeed.

A must-read for anyone who wants to follow their passion and achieve more in life!
By Claudia Svartefoss
I truly enjoyed reading this uplifting book, and I especially liked the chapter on the 8 Ps: Perfection in Performance Prepares Path to Productivity and Provides Personal Pride! Today we are flooded with information about how we shouldn’t dream or reach for more, and how perfection is an awful thing! But without reaching for perfection, what else is there to reach for?

I enjoyed the author’s perspective about having to let go of mediocrity and public opinions and moving forward, at our individual pace, toward the perfection we find meaningful! In this journey, as the author describes, we will have to let go of our so called friends who like to gossip, to stay true to our real friends, and to spend our time perfecting our skills for greater success! What a wonderful way to see ourselves, the world, and others!

I agree with the advice on TEAM - Together Everyone Achieves More, and I enjoyed answering the author question on when, where, and why I, the reader, was born.

The entire book is so empowering, uplifting, and speaks to our deeper understanding that we are here to succeed and to live happy, fulfilled lives, and the author is showing us the way to do so, easily, based on his years of experience and expertise! I also really enjoyed that the author encourages us to see him as a wise friend here to assist us, and not some far away guru teaching us things that will take us decades to learn! I really liked the down to earth tone in this book and that the author’s true belief in our ability as human beings to succeed in our individual lives shines through!

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants more in life, who wants to achieve their dreams, follow their passion, and not spend years of experience learning what they can learn by reading the wise words in this book!

Be More. Achieve More. Your True Worth is More Than You Realize. Realize it.
By David A. Dill
Why are you here? That is the real question. It is the question everyone should ponder and answer. It is also fitting regarding this book. Why are you here, looking, trying to decide whether or not to purchase this book? You are obviously here because you are looking for a better life. You are looking to be more than you are. This is one of the most powerful books I have read in a long time. I can't really find a way to recommend this book more highly than to say go purchase it right now. If you don't get and read this book, you really aren't serious about improving your life. I say, you are reading this review because you want more from life. You want to be successful. OK. You are in the right place. So, go ahead and get it and read it. You are not going to be disappointed. Listen to what the author, Bharat Mathur, is telling you. Do what he says. Pay attention to the 8 Ps: Perfection in Performance Prepares Path to Productivity and Provides Personal Pride. Pay attention to the steps to improvement he provides for you to follow and do it. It is a very well written book and doesn't take long to read because once you start, you won't stop until you get to the end, which really isn't the end. It is just the beginning. Go purchase this book now. Answer the question: When, where and why was I born? If you are truly serious about success, allow him to "pull" you to that success. If you don't read this book, you don't really have a problem remaining in your current situation. Is your current situation sufficient? I think not. Don't resist. Be pulled to your true worth.

Amazon.com Review
The Irish in America was created, in part, as a companion to the PBS documentary series of the same name that was first aired in January 1998. Journalist Terry Golway's text provides a solid backbone to the book: she tells the usual story of Irish involvement in American politics and also sheds light on contributions that the Irish have made to American industry and culture. Golway's text is interspersed (sometimes a bit confusingly) with hundreds of illustrations, as well as with many brief essays by Irish American notables, including historians, novelists, comedians, musicians, and politicians. Two of the most enlightening are historian Ellen Skerrett's essay on the Irish American penchant for building cathedrals and Maureen Murphy's look at how Irish immigrant girls found upward mobility in America. Other essays aren't as strictly historical, but the matching of writer and subject makes them irresistible. For example, a lively contribution by novelist Thomas Flanagan on Irish Americans as portrayed in John Ford's films raises serious issues while still being entertaining (much like Ford's films). Despite a few other inclusions that may make some readers scratch their heads or roll their eyes (such as Denis Leary's essay, which contains something guaranteed to offend almost everyone), The Irish in America is a worthy effort, one that offers valuable insight into American history and the distinct role played by the Irish.

Beautiful book, well done and full of facts.
By John P. Rooney
As a person of Irish descent, I was very happy to see "The Irish in America". This book is full of colorful illustrations showing what the Irish have accomplished in this country. I am referencing the book in my MA, History Thesis, this Autumn.
On page 57, however, the editors have made an understandable error. They attribute the founding of Manhattan College (1853), De La Salle University (1863) and St. Mary's (Moraga, California, (1863) to the Irish Christian Brothers. As a 1965 graduate of Manhattan College, I can tell you that these three colleges were founded by the French Christian Brothers, also know as the De La Salle Brothers. This teaching order was founded in Paris by St. John Baptist de la Salle, and predates the Irish Christian Brothers by almost two hundred years. To my knowledge, the only college founded by the Irish Christian Brothers in the U.S. is Iona College (1940) in New York. Personally, I enjoyed the book, found new facts about the Irish in America, and would recommend it to any Irish or Irish-American person.

Famous Irish offer engrossing overview of culture in USA
By A Customer
Coffey and Golway give a wonderful overview of the experiences of Irish men and women in the United States. Coming to the U.S. as a result of political an religious oppression, as well as a result of the potato blight in the mid-19th century, the Irish worked hard to gain respectablity and political voices as American citizens. In many cases, especially in the early 20th Century, to be Irish was to be a second class citizen in the U.S. Today's attitudes prove that the Irish have come a long way in American society from being judged as such to becoming a very proud and celebrated nationality in our country.
Coffey and Golway use numerous anecdotes, excerpts, and other quotations from famous and not so famous Irish Americans. Included in this book are Denis Leary, Frank McCourt, and a forward by Patrick Kennedy. Reflections of these Irish-American personalities on their grandparents' or parents' lives and hard work, as well as memories of Catholic school, and other aspects of Irish-American life. Glossy photographs accent each passage beautifully and add to the overall attraction of the book. Contributions by all the authors provides a celebration of Irish ethnicity and heritage in the United States that is portrayed as humorous, melancholy, but overall proud. This book accents the PBS Documentary by the same name very nicely. After reading this book, I wished in a sense, that I had some Irish heritage.

Terror Assaulter (O.M.W.O.T.), by Benjamin Marra

Drawn in a 1990s comic book style and starring the “Terror Assaulter,” this book satirizes American values in much the same way director Paul Verhoeven (Robocop) does.

Cartoonist Benjamin Marra brilliantly satirizes America’s obsession with justice ― and disinterest in consequences ― via a highly stylized, hypermasculine style that gushes with violence, sex, and international intrigue, battering down the boundaries between psychedelia, political commentary, and aggressive expressionism. Terror Assaulter must defeat Terror at all costs, as long as it leaves time for steamy dates with hot chicks. The man’s codename is O.M.W.O.T. (One Man War On Terror) and he is the world’s greatest protector, and a villain’s worst nightmare. This is a hilarious satire of American foreign policy over the last decade, neocon philosophy, the state of American masculinity and sexuality, and male power fantasy in escapist entertainment. Full-color illustrations throughout.

Review
“It’s quite possible that OMWOT isn’t interested in categorization, or explanation, or order. It might just be an exercise in nihilism and narrative chaos. And the thing is, no matter how you read it ― as a narrative with more to deliver, as a satire of bad comics, as an exercise in emphasizing ugliness ― OMWOT succeeds. It works on every level you try to categorize it under, because it feels, on some level, spiritually pure. It is what it is, because it’s devoted to telling its disturbing story of sex and violence with a completely straight face.” (Paul Constant - The Seattle Review of Books)

“The Most Badass Graphic Novel Ever Created… It can be read as a trenchant spoof of the jingoistic Bush years or of Z-grade 80’s action films… or it can be read as the worrisome notebook doodles of a demented teenager. Whatever it is, you probably haven’t read anything like it before.” (Dan Meth - Buzzfeed)

“...Marra expresses his hero’s hyper-exaggerated masculinity... through in the combination of over-the-top fight choreography and quippy dialogue, casting the lead character a wise-cracking action hero. It’s a role that is highlighted by Marra’s art, which juggles grisly killings with sensational action beats and bursts of dark comedy and sexual relief.” (Oliver Sava - The A.V. Club)

“Everything about this book is over the top, from the bright colors to the violence (exploding vehicles, bullets pounding into flesh, martial arts moves that defy physics). What made me laugh throughout were the very graphic sex scenes with their stilted dialogue, where characters state what is happening as if they’re required to say something. It’s the best send-up of sex scenes in bad action movies that I’ve ever seen.” (Gene Ambaum - Unshelved)

“...Terror Assaulter [is] one of the most unique action-based comics to hit the stands in years. ... This is what hardcore punk looks like in comics form, with a hero whose d*** is literally hanging out and guns ready to blow. I can’t wait to read it again.” (Kyle Pinion - The Beat)

“Super inspiring. A visceral shining beacon of lightning for lesser cartoonists to marvel at. Does what comics are supposed to do, builds a new world, sometimes a better world... a different, cracked-mirror-view world. It's the world so tightly associated with fantasy itself that it says something essential about comics themselves, resonates on the highest frequency the medium is capable of. Or if it can get higher, f--- it, that's too high.” (Josh Bayer (Raw Power, Theth) - Tech Times)

“Terror Assaulter is weird, and at times uncomfortable... –but in all of its discords the book creates an energy that infuses its anthemic punchlines with real force. ... There’s a really crazy, disturbing, and strange world beyond the edges of Terror Assaulter–and even in glimpses, it is fairly potent.” (Sarah Horrocks - The Comics Journal)

“It’s a beautiful thing. ... I’m waiting for the layers to pile up, a la Tarantino, but right now it’s damn weird art he’s making ― ripe for misinterpretation. And yet the work is getting more popular. Weirder and more popular. Something is afoot here. I like it.” (Dan Nadel - The Comics Journal)

“[Terror Assaulter] is an intricately constructed art comic that presents itself as a stripped down, ultra-simplified action comic. Its satirical elements are hilarious, more so because Marra doesn’t announce them as satire, he plays the whole thing completely straight. Rendered exclusively in primary colors, it’s also a beautifully crafted work, and highly entertaining. Though much of the copious ass kicking and gun blasting in the book is done in the service of Marra’s understated satire, it’s also a hell of a fun read.” (Harris Smith - comiXology)

“If you can imagine Fletcher Hanks collaborating with Larry Hama or Chuck Dixon on a Jack Kirby-inspired, deadpan G.I. Joe parody that was serialized in the back of Playboy in the late 1980s, well, you’d be pretty darn close to what Marra has come up with here. You’d just have to multiply that by a factor of 10 or 20. It’s not for everyone, obviously, but is it any good? Let’s just say… 'Yes, it’s good.'” (J. Caleb Mozzocco - ComicsAlliance)

“...Marra plumbs deeper-than-ever dimensions in funnybook eccentricity...” (Joe McCulloch - The Comics Journal)

“...[S]uper-sexy, uber-sleazy, super-weird... I can’t think of another book that feels like a Peter Saul painting, reads like the diary of someone’s darkest fantasy, and never for a second lets you forget that it’s the most unreal version of a 'realistic' subject ever put to paper. Like a pop song written by a masterful craftsman, there’s never a verse that goes on too long or loses the overall rhythm, even when he’s riffing off into a Hendrix-like frenzy of spontaneity and power chords. The book builds to a complete orchestral crescendo, making its message about the retarded nature of a mind that thrives on pulp violence unmistakably clear. Everything he is hinting at about how this phenomenon is at the center of modern American culture is pretty clear too.” (Josh Bayer - Bin Crawler)

About the Author

I AM READING THIS COMIC
By ILYA
I am reading this comic. It is full of gratuitous sex and violence. It is being deliberately bad and ugly. It is not flat out hilarious but it is pretty twisted and daring - the bad sex goes every which way, and loose. I am glad this comic exists. I am glad Benjamin Marra is a sneaky farker. This is the best worst comic I have read since his last one. This is my review finishing. I am content.

Amazing
By Basquaise
Not for the faint of heart, _Terror Assaulter_ is a 100% over-the-top tour de force, at once preposterous, gratuitous, ingenious, and hilarious, with often breathtaking (and lush, and jaw-droppingly violent) visuals. A tribute to and parody of Jack Kirby's Vietnam-era O.M.A.C. (One Man Army Corps), Ben Marra's book is the perfect holiday gift for your... a certain kind of person who would like this sort of thing. Who will _love it_.

Entertaining and offensive transgressive surreal madness below.
By A Book Is A Wonderous Thing
I cannot imagine the script to this thing:
NARRATION: Terror Assaulter chops off villain's head with sword.
DIALOGUE: "I am chopping off his head with my sword now!"
"He chopped off my head with a sword!"

But when was the last time a comix made me both laugh out loud and cringe in shock, AND think "Of course a child could do better" AND think think "No one can approach the genius of this comix!"

There's sex (or all sordid sorts) there's violence (of every sordid sort). Entertaining and offensive transgressive surreal madness here.
