I loved the author and know that the Spirit of God was with her as she wrote this book. An easy read that hits on areas you never dreamed of covering in prayer for your marriage.

A lesser classic but still worthwhile

Norman McGrath's previous book "Photographing Buildings Inside and Out" was a classic in it's time. This new version is still a significant publication. However, it can best be summarised as "Norman's transitition to digital with a little help from his friends".

The layout is somewhat confused compared with the earlier book, with the section on equipment not coming in until page 63 and even then being mixed up with HDR and shooting for websites. However, at least he scopes the digital options and is not a diehard who still insists that professional architectural photography must be done on 5" x 4" large format. His chapters on interior and exterior photography have many useful tips for the working professional.

However, when it comes to the nitty gritty of new technology, the coverage is mostly quite thin and relies on reference to other texts for the practical detail. In some ways this is good as the last thing a book on architectural photography should be is just another photo editing software primer. However, there are a few glaring omissions. HDR is not explained in any detail, with the reader instead enthusiastically referred to another text, one that is arguably not the best or most popular on the subject. Correcting converging verticals using photo editing software is mentioned but even simple instruction on the use of the transform-perspective and free-transform tools in Photoshop is not included. The author still obviously uses strobes quite significantly in his work, despite the advent of HDR, but there is little if any real guidance in their use. Much of what he has to say is contained in the captions and text attached to separate examples of his work. While most of the examples are excellent and inspiring, this approach is at the expense of continuity in the overall book and not much help when you are looking for help on a particular topic.

Overall, the book is still a worthwhile reference for the serious architectural photographer, if for nothing else because it demolishes the mantra that all professional architectural photography must be done on large format equipment, even though the majority of it is never published much bigger than A4. The photographs are excellent but not superior to those in his earlier book, but then fine photography never was and probably never will be solely governed by technology

Can't say I learned much from this book

I am an experienced portrait and landscape photographer and was starting to do interior and architecture photography. Since this book was titled "Professional Technique for Shooting Interior and Exterior Spaces" I bought it hoping to learn basics (ex leveling camera for straight lines, interior lighting, rise/fall, going with wider or narrower lenses, distributing space in the frame etc).

Sad to say I didn't learn much because this book is more organized as a collection of wonderful images with complementary text instead of the other way around. In each chapter the author starts with a bit of general text and quickly moves into showcasing pictures and explaining how they were shot. Most pictures come with plenty of details. In fact that's where I found few useful techniques, buried in the small text.

One such technique I stumbled into for example is that including more floor in the frame gives a sense of greater space in interior shots. That is the kind of technique I was looking forward to learning, but sadly this book doesn't offer much.

Overall, the book is easy to read and full of interesting pictures, but comes short on the main topic, technique. If you are looking for something about photography to read for entertainment this book might be for you. Otherwise if you aim to get a solid understanding of architectural photography consider Architectural Photography: Composition, Capture, and Digital Image Processing by Adrian Schulz.

some shockingly poor image quality

I'm a professional photographer, used to be an architect, have worked on architectural shoots, etc. etc. The book is fine, and he has a number of really nice images, if not a lot of 'inside baseball' specifics or secrets that would actually be helpful for other pros. I purchased it as research for a class I'm teaching, and while not extremely useful, it provided a couple slides for my lectures.

The reason I gave it such a poor review is that some of the images, incredibly, look like they're just the low-res jpeg preview for the photo. It's as if the publisher somehow just sent the layout to press without the actual files. Blotchy, artifacty, blurred, nearly illegible.

It's unbelievably unprofessional and a real blemish on not only the book but Mr. McGrath's reputation. I'm frankly shocked that he let it get out into the world, if he's as big of a stickler for quality as he seems to be.

The following day, popular Chicago priest Father Thomas Prisciotti watches news reports of the previous night's horrors. It seems that the primary suspect is a group of so-called terrorists called The Brethren, who had struck in other cities before. Given the escalating tensions, he's not particularly surprised to learn that Pope Sylvester III - who has succeeded Francis - wishes to comfort the masses. But shock comes when he learns that the Pope has chosen Prisciotti for a special task force.

As he proceeds to unpack the true motive for the Pope's request, the priest uncovers a ancient Vatican secret, a shocking threat to humanity, and a papal directive that contradicts everything he has ever been taught.

You don't have to be a Christian to be engrossed by the global conspiracy so expertly drawn by first-time author Presley Acuna. Given the seemingly endless escalation of religiously motivated violence in the world, the plot - which is inspired by Biblical prophecy, but is in no way constrained by it - is certainly plausible enough. It's also easy to fall for the influential priest that hosts his own show on Trinity Broadcasting Network. Prisciotti is a rare character in that he manages to be inspiring, philosophical, proactive and vulnerable all at once.

The novel isn't without its faults. Acuna skews academic with his craft, and there are more than a few three-dollar words and obscure references that George Orwell would have quickly edited out. Certain allegories fall flat as well. But odds are that you'll be so thoroughly taken by the cadence of Acuna's blistering plot that you'll absolve him of these literary sins and turn the pages ever-faster until you've reached the breathtaking climax.

PRESLEY E. ACUNA writes unconventional thrillers, based in reality, but which take unexpected turns into the realms of fantasy, magical realism, science fiction and horror. His aim, with every project, is to engage the reader in an engrossing mystery or adventure, while simultaneously using the situation to explore the deeper meanings of the ideas behind the story. When he is not writing, he is working as a systems engineer on the dot com frontier. He is also a musician, and formerly a member of the Supertones. He is a born and raised New Yorker, currently living in Brooklyn, but he also enjoys spending time at his cabin, deep in the woods of western Massachusetts, with his wife and the host of critters that always manage to find their way into the house.

"The Day And The Hour" An Intriguing, Suspenseful Thriller

"The Day And The Hour" tackles some of the most critical and timely issues of our age with an original slant on centuries-old entrenchments . The perils of religious fundamentalism are examined from a new angle, with major religious and political institutions of the world brought in to debate--via the author's thoughtful perspectives--the dangers of unthinking allegiance to charismatic personalities. Readers who enjoy Dan Brown will be attracted to this novel, for Mr. Acuna shows similar skills in combining philosophical musings with fast-paced, complex plotting. The author describes many of today's current "hot spots" worldwide--from Washington D.C. to Jerusalem to The Vatican--with great detail and authority; yet the book is set solidly in the genre of supernatural suspense. Readers should be aware of this intention from the start and be willing to go there; if they can, they will not be disappointed.

Not your typical 'End of the world as we know it'

In The Day and the Hour, Acuna combines the factual with fiction and the fantastic in this untraditional take on the struggle between good and evil. I highly recommend not reading any spoilers to the plot, even skipping the back cover summary. Intriguing from the beginning, the book draws you step by step into a series of global events that become increasingly alarming until things truly spin out of control. The story is very rich in detail, making the journey of the characters very personal as they experience acts of terror and war that we all have in the back of our minds but never actually expect to happen. We can feel the struggle of authorities to come up with some sort of reasonable response when common sense is being challenged. As the climax builds, things start to feel more like an adventure movie script with rapidly switching scenes, inevitably so because of the global nature of the apocalypse. I couldn’t put the book down until the very last page. Well done, a great read.

Fast-paced, intelligent, cinematic.

This book should be a film. Like any good thriller this story isn't quite what it seems to be. It starts out to be a tale of international intrigue, not unlike other books you might pick up off the best seller shelf -- but pretty quickly escalates into something much more audacious and apocalyptic. It kept me guessing and then, when utterly engaged right up to the end. The pace is lively, the locations exotic and the characters original. The only reason I'm not giving it five stars is that I wanted more time with some of them, especially Yordon. Maybe in another book... In the meantime, pull up a comfy chair or better yet, find a nice spot on the beach and hold on tight. You are in for a treat.

Along with many others of the depression era Franlin Hall grew up in rural poverty and was deeply religious. Initially he was with the Methodist church but their stance against healing forced him elsewhere. During the depression and World War II he travelled as an independent evangelist. In 1946, he published a brief book entitled "Atomic Power with God through Prayer and Fasting." The book, which provided detailed information on the methods and benefits of fasting, was an immediate success and brought Hall considerable fame. According to Hall, all of the major evangelists began following his fasting regime and miracles erupted everywhere. Many observers of the early revival years agreed, as one said, "Every one of these men down through the years followed Franklin Hall's method of fasting."

We live in a day when it is absolutely necessary for every believer to function in supernatural power. Everyone of us! Fasting is the only way to come into that. This book is anointed. I started reading it and started a 10 day fast which I am on day 8 now. I feel clearer, more sensitive to the Lord and my faith uncapped! One knows they should fast but I just couldn't muster the willpower or gumption. But this book imparted to me an empowering grace to do this extended fast. I've had phenomenal grace. Get this book if you want to go deeper.

Easy to read

Easy to read. At first it seems like it might bore you, but I haven't been able to put it down. Very informative and helpful read, especially if your entering an extended fast and having trouble sticking to it. If that's the case get the prayer that moves mountains book to go along with it and you will see victory. I love this book. It's down to earth, old but exceptional, VERY informative, and is, at least in my fasting journey, a must have, must read book. Great purchase!

About the Author
Erin Amerman presently teaches anatomy and physiology at Florida State College - Jacksonville. She has been involved in anatomy and physiology education for more than 14 years as an author and professor. She received a B.S. in cellular and molecular biology from the University of West Florida and a Doctorate in Podiatric Medicine from Des Moines University. Dr. Amerman is the author of the best-selling Exploring Anatomy and Physiology in the Laboratory series with Morton Publishing Company, and of the textbook Human Anatomy and Physiology with Pearson Education (to be released in January 2015). She is deeply committed to helping her students succeed in the A&P course, and generating curiosity and excitement about the material and its application in their future careers. Dr. Amerman is a member of HAPS, and enjoys attending the annual HAPS conferences, especially when they are in locations that have ample hiking opportunities and many different species of snake. When she is not writing or in the classroom, Dr. Amerman enjoys spending time with her family and her menagerie of rescued cats, dogs, pet rats, snakes, tetras, and a turtle. She also practices karate and kobudo (she will earn her second-degree black belt in April of 2015), and enjoys photographing the local wildlife around her home in rural northern Florida. She can often be found hiking around the prairie with a camera and snake hook in hand.

Beware: Code NOT Included

I thought that I would save the $10 difference that it would have cost me to buy from the college. I wasn't aware that the necessary code wouldn't be included. My mistake cost me $160. If you will need the code, don't make the same mistake- buy elsewhere.

The dictionary itself easily deserves 5 stars. I can't believe the 1828 dictionary isn't a household name. A sign of the times, I suppose.

This Kindle edition seems like it was put together well but for some reason the search index, when used with my Kindle Paperwhite, doesn't work. It does work using Amazon's desktop app but I do most of my digital reading on my Kindle so this ebook is, at the moment, somewhat useless to me.

I did speak with the publisher and he was good enough to promise to make efforts to see if the problem is unique to my own device or if it applies to all Paperwhites and act accordingly. I will report with any updates.

One thing that I REALLY wanted was an Integrable dictionary that works with the Kindle and so decided to ask the publisher about this. He explained he too wanted to do this but Amazon doesn't allow for anyone to create integrated dictionaries for the Kindle.

I rattled my brain thinking how I might be able to find enough people who would love to have Noah's 1828 dictionary used in much of their Kindle reading and, perhaps, to petition Amazon to reevaluate this policy and allow alternate dictionaries used for their e-reader.

After giving it much thought I realized it would be wiser and more efficient if I let the readers come to me and voice with their fingers.

If you want to see an Integrated 1828 dictionary for the Kindle then PLEASE "like" this review and let Amazon know that you want them to allow users to choose which dictionary they prefer. While I think their should be certain standards for what is considered an acceptable dictionary, Noah's 1828 dictionary more than qualifies and puts modern dictionaries to shame.

Please, Amazon representatives, do the right thing and let it happen and put Noah Webster's masterpiece in the prominent place where it belongs. The Kindle is a wonderful device and it can only be made more wonderful by integrating it with the greatest dictionary of the English language ever published.

Grade 8-10 Wimp, nerd, social retard some kids just naturally become scapegoats. Luckily an inner strength and an ability to survive sometimes surface, and these same scapegoats can confound their parents and acquaintances. Cole portrays this when fellow campers leave wimpy Howie Mitchell and ``real dog'' Laura Golden naked and scared on an island. When counselors arrive looking for them, Howie misunderstands and fears the return of their tormenters. He forces non-swimmer Laura to hang onto a log and float to the mainland. Reaching the safety of a deserted cabin, and realizing that they can't face returning to camp, they plot their survival until Parent's Weekend, when Laura's mother will visit, offering hope of sanctuary. Cole manages to instill just the right amount of suspense in their adventures through a potentially dangerous street kid, a cleaning woman who wants to turn them in to the police, and a sheriff who eventually snags them. Neither Howie nor Laura are initially likable kids, each either worrying or whining too much, but as they grow so does one's regard for them. The final distillation is a strong, well-blended story of modern day survival. A comparable book for older readers would be Lloyd Kropp's Greencastle (Freundlich, 1987). SURVIVING ON THE FRINGE OF SOCIETY

Wow, this book really holds your interest, hooking the reader's sympathy for the Boy and the Girl right from the start. You just Have to continue reading to see how they cope with sudden abandonment (supposed to be temporary) and decide to get even with the cruel kids at summer camp. Loss of clothing, money, self respect--just a malicious joke, you understand, to "punish" two social misfits.
Through no fault of their own, two pre teens were chosen to be their camp's annual sacrificial victims (i.e. goats), by being forced to spend a few embarrassing hours on a nearby island. Ha-ha--very funny to the terrified kids, who recognize their degrading situation and who ultimately reject the decision. Thus Howie and Laura (who did not even know each other) are forced to rely on each other's wits and daring (strengths they did not realize that they possessed) to reverse the kids' malicious decree. Not only to escape their dismal fate, but to survive on the outskirts of society for 3 days. They determine to get even, to pay them back for all the humiliation. Anything rather than endure the ridiule of returning to camp.
They decide to be proactive to preserve their own digntiy, to wait until the girl's mother comes up for Parents' Weekend. The plot rivets your attention for the kids must overcome incredible obstacles--posed by adutls and other kids--to live without the pale. It is unlikely that such social outcasts could be transformed so quickly into a cool "bandit" and a "fox wearing glasses", but the plot presents an interesting concept of social and physical survival. The book reads swiftly due to extensive dialogue, without the usual teenage platitudes. Their journey of self-discovery makes a fascinating read, with dark social undertones. For kids of all ages and adults harboring hurt kids inside. You will not be disappitned!

The Coming of Age Story

I read this book when I was 11 years old and I am now 21. I enjoyed every bit so much that I know it word for word. I think the book is excellent for the mature young reader because it captures some issues that most adults would be able to relate to only through metaphors. This promising book includes puberty issues, isolation issues, and issues of social and moral growth. This book is still one of my favorites and I recommend it to any young adult that has ever had to face dilemmas at a very young age. I challenge the young reader to find their similarities and differences between the Bryce (main character) and his companion with themself.

About the Author
Stafford Hildred is one of Britain's best-known television critics and show business writers with a long career in the media. He has previously written and co-written an array of bestselling biographies whose subjects include John Thaw, David Beckham, Roy Keane, Rod Stewart and Jamie Oliver. Tim Ewbank was a Fleet Street show business writer before working as a TV correspondent for several newspapers including the Daily Mail. He has also written for a wide range of magazines and worked in television and radio.

Best Biography I've Read

I'm a great fan of Martin Shaw's acting and his body of work. This is a great biography of the man and is also the best biography I've read of anyone, because it is done with respect and understanding. As any fan of the series "The Professionals" knows, there are some varying opinions on how the actor felt about his most popular job and the insights given here make this book outstanding and well-worth reading for that alone. However, every page was fascinating, even though as a long time watcher of Martin Shaw's work, I know quite a bit about him.

Martin Shaw fans

For anyone who follows Martin Shaw's career this book is a must read. It is very entertaining with plenty of information on his early years as an actor. Martin Shaw is very versatile and I would love to read an updated biography of his work. Perhaps Tim Ewbank could continue from where he left off as it would be wonderful to read about his rolls in the George Gently and Judge John Deed series.

A Good Starting Point/ Overview of a Superb Actor and Human Being

This book is a good starting place to learn about Martin Shaw of British/American stage, screen, and PBS/British television. His
portrayal of Judge John Deed, Detective George Gently, and many other fine characters since the 1960's have been uniquely and superbly delivered to his audiences. Those who appreciate him, will also be interested to learn about his spirituality, his determination, and his deep passion for life. But this book doesn't delve into the private humanity of the actor. Instead, it adequately covers, in sequence, the acting experiences in his life and gives one a good overview of the vastness and variety of the roles he's played. So, I recommend it for those of you who wish to begin their research into his life. I am still waiting for someone to write a more in-depth biography, regarding the more personal side of the man. How did he become the caring, kind, thoughtful human being his behavior over the years has shown him to be? You'll have to go elsewhere for that.
