Ali and Nino: A Love Story, by Kurban Said

Ali and Nino is the epic novel of enduring romance in a time of war.

It has been hailed as one of the most romantic epic novels of all time. Ali and Nino, two lovers from vastly different backgrounds, grow up together in carefree innocence in Baku on the Caspian Sea. Here, where Eastern and Occidental collide, they are inevitably drawn into the events of the First World War and the Russian Revolution. Torn apart by the turmoil, Ali joins the defense of Azerbajan from the onslaught of the Red Army, and Nino flees to the safety of Paris with their child, not knowing whether they will ever see each other again. A sweeping tale, as romantic and gripping as Gone with the Wind or Dr. Zhivago, it portrays, against a gloriously exotic backdrop, the enduring love between childhood friends divided by their separate cultures.

Amazon.com Review
As is true of all great literature, Kurban Said's Ali and Nino has timeless appeal. Set in the years surrounding the Russian Revolution and the rise of the Soviet Union, Said's tale of an Azerbaijani Muslim boy in love with a Georgian Christian girl is both tender and disturbingly prescient. The novel, first published in 1937, begins as Ali Khan Shirvanshir is finishing his last year of high school: We were a very mixed lot, we forty schoolboys who were having a Geography lesson one hot afternoon in the Imperial Russian Humanistic High School of Baku, Transcaucasia: thirty Mohammedans, four Armenians, two Poles, three Sectarians, and one Russian. The multi-ethnic Baku, it seems, stands at a crossroads between West and East, and, as the smug Russian professor informs his pupils, it is their responsibility to decide "whether our town should belong to progressive Europe or to reactionary Asia." For Ali Khan Shirvanshir there is no doubt--he belongs to the East; his beloved Nino, however, is "a Christian, who eats with knife and fork, has laughing eyes and wears filmy silk stockings."

Far away, to the West, there are rumblings of war. When the Russian Revolution begins, Ali Khan chooses not to fight; the Czar's fate is of little interest to a Muslim living in far away Transcaucasia. But the young man senses that another, greater danger is gathering on his country's borders--an "invisible hand" trying to force his world into new ways, the ways of the West. He assures his worried father that, like his ancestors, he is willing to die in battle, but at a time of his own choosing. In the meantime, he courts Nino and eventually marries her in the teeth of scandal and opposition. This union of East and West is at times a difficult one as Ali Khan finds himself lured further and further into European ways. When Soviet troops invade, however, he must choose once and for all whether to stand for Asia or Europe.

One of the many pleasures Ali and Nino offers is Kurban Said's lovingly rendered evocations of Muslim culture. Another is his compassionate portrait of the protagonists' difficult but profound relationship. Modern readers coming to this novel in the wake of the fall of Communism, outbreaks of sectarian violence, and the rise of religious fundamentalism will find disturbing parallels in its cautionary chronicle of cultures colliding and a way of life brutally destroyed. In the end, however, it is not historical accuracy, but rather the charm and passion of the title characters that lifts Said's only novel into literature's highest ranks. --Alix Wilber

From Publishers Weekly
First published in 1937 and issued in the U.S. by Random House in 1970, Said's romantic tale of young love and political upheaval in Central Asia calls for violins and handkerchiefs. Set mostly in Azerbaijan during WWI and the Russian Revolution, this captivating novel is a cinematic, at times melodramatic, mix of romance and wartime adventure. Its hero, narrator Ali Khan Shirvanshir, a Tartar and Shi'ite Muslim, flouts social convention by marrying his childhood friend, Nino Kipiani, a fair-skinned Georgian Christian. Ali rebels against a tradition-bound, male-chauvinist society typified by his father's pre-wedding advice: "Do not beat her when she is pregnant." When war erupts, Nino, ensconced in a villa in Tehran, keeps her pregnancy by Ali a secret as long as she can. Their marriage is a union of Western and Eastern sensibilities. Nino is unhappy in Persia, but Ali is reluctant to accompany her to Paris, where she flees with their infant daughter as Ali marches off to defend the short-lived Azerbaijani republic against the invading Red Army. Said (1905-1942) was born Lev Naussimbaum in Baku, the son of a German governess and a Jewish businessman. He combines starkly realistic depictions of war with colorful tableaux?wild dances, an oral poetry competition, desert camels, a meddlesome eunuch. A saga of war and love and the difficult marriage of Europe and Asia in the Caucasus, this is at heart a rousing, old-fashioned, tear-jerking love story.

From Library Journal
Little is actually known about this author except that he wrote this one and only book in Vienna in 1937 though he was not Austrian. He left Austria for Italy soon after and died there, of unknown causes. The book tells of the love between the title characters, which is challenged by the political upheaval of both World War I and the Russian Revolution.

A Gem Of A Tale Fit For Queen Shahrazad's Anthology
By Jana L.Perskie
"Ali and Nino: A Love Story" is a poignant tale of love and adventure which Queen Shahrazad would have been proud to add to her anthology. This compelling story is set in Baku, Azerbaijan, the oil rich city on the shores of the Caspian Sea. Depending on one's religion and ethnicity, Baku used to be considered either the easternmost city in Europe, or the doorway to the Orient. Many ancient, aristocratic and fabulously wealthy families, Georgian and Armenian Christians, and Persian Muslims lived here for generations. The Russian Empire, which encompassed both Georgia and Azerbaijan, maintained a tenuous peace, and, in fact, the citizens of Baku formed deep intercultural friendships which went back a hundred years, or more. However, beneath the surface, the conflict between Islam and Christianity seethed in the never-ending struggle for cultural and religious domination. The novel covers the turbulent times from 1909 to 1920, and opens on the eve of World War I, continues through the Bolshevik Revolution, and provides deep insight into the conflicts between Eastern and Western cultures.

Ali Khan Shirvanshir, the son and heir of an ancient and noble Persian family is our protagonist and narrator. He was born and raised in Baku, Azerbaijan, in the Trans-Caucasus, at the crossroads between Europe and Asia, Christianity and Islam, modernity and tradition. Ali Khan is finishing his last year of high school as the novel begins. His forty classmates at the Imperial Russian Humanistic High School of Baku are a mixed lot, numbering thirty Mohammedans, four Armenians, two Poles, three Sectarians, and one Russian. Their Russian Professor condescendingly informs his pupils during a geography lesson that it is their responsibility to decide "whether our town should belong to progressive Europe or to reactionary Asia." He is not pleased when Ali Khan states his preference for Asia.

Ali is fascinated by the secrets, mysteries, hidden nooks and alleys of Baku, his home - "the soft night murmurs, the moon over flat roofs and hot quiet afternoons in the mosque's courtyards," the scent of sea air and the smell of oil. He thanks God that he was born a Muslim of the Shiite faith. He only wishes to live his life and die in the same street, in the same house where he was born - along with Nino Kipiani, with the flashing eyes, who eats with a knife and fork, goes about without a veil, and wears sheer silk stockings. Although young, the two love deeply, their feelings continue to grow and endure in spite of the seemingly insurmountable cultural and religious conflicts that confront them. They are both children of the Caucasus, and their friendship was born on the Caspian shores of Baku.

When Ali recounts to Nino the discussion that took place in class and how he had heatedly argued for Baku to remain Asian, Nino says bluntly: "Ali Khan, you are stupid. Thank God we are in Europe. If we were in Asia they would have made me wear the veil ages ago and you could not see me."

Ali has the soul of a desert man. A friend once told him, "The Orient's dry intoxication, comes from the desert, where hot wind and hot sand make men drunk, where the world is simple and without problems. The desert man has but one face and knows but one truth, and that truth fulfills him. The fanatic comes from the desert." This might have been true of Ali if it were not for his great love for Nino, his real life Georgian Christian princess. Their feelings for each other makes them both much more complex characters than they would be otherwise, encompassing a greater wisdom and compassion together than they would have ever been able to alone.

A pious friend tells Ali, "The woman is just an acre on which the man sows." He reminds Ali that women have "no souls nor intelligence. No Paradise or Hell is waiting for a woman. When she dies she just disintegrates into nothing." Ali does not believe this, but begins to feel confused and alienated. Then his father advises him to never forget, when he marries, his wife will live in his shadow. Meanwhile, after the couple's engagement is announced, Nino's father talks with Ali about the necessity for mutual trust and respect in marriage. "Man and wife," he says, "should help each other by word and deed. And they must never forget that they have equal rights and that their souls are their own."

The couple's relationship is at the center of the novel's events, but "Ali and Nino" is much more than a romance. The story takes the reader on a fascinating magic carpet ride to cosmopolitan Baku; irresistibly beautiful Tbilisi, capital of Georgia; the Karabakh, of western Azerbaijan, where the world's most glorious and hardy horses are bred; Teheran, the ancient, mystical capital city of Persia, and the mountains of Dagestan. We witness the consequences of love and passion; war, political and cultural turmoil, and revolution; honor and disgrace, and the impact of Islam, Christianity, and newly born Bahaism on the times.

While reading "Ali and Nino : A Love Story," I was reminded of an old saying my grandmother used to repeat, "A bird may love a fish, but where will they build a home." Ali and Nino loved each other deeply, were bound by a strong friendship and mutual respect, but in the period in which they lived it was almost impossible for them to find a living environment in which both of them could breathe and be who they were as individuals, as well as a couple.

This is a beautifully written novel, both lyrical and powerful in its use of language. What is most strange, is that the author's, or authors,' story is almost as dramatic as that of Ali and Nino. The novel was first published in German, in Germany, in 1937. Paul Theroux, who wrote the Afterword to the Anchor Edition, (the one I have and recommend), calls the novel, "....one of literature's foundlings." Apparently, lost and/or forgotten in the chaos of WWII and the aftermath, "Ali and Nino" was rediscovered in a secondhand bookstore in the ruins of postwar Berlin by Jenia Graman. She read the novel, and struck by the originality and beauty of the story, translated it and saw to its publication - first in England and then in the United States.

It is thought that the author, Kurban Said, is actually two people. Lev Nussimbaum was a Jew, born in Baku in 1905 whose family moved to Berlin during the turmoil of the Russian Revolution. Nussimbaum became a journalist and author, and eventually converted to Islam, taking the name Essad Bey. When Hitler became Chancellor of the German Nation in 1933, Nussimbaum moved to Austria where he began an intense friendship with Baroness Elfriede Ehrenfels, also a writer. It is thought that "Ali and Nino" is a collaborated effort between the two. Whoever wrote this extraordinary novel, it is well worth your attention!

What a Hidden Jewel!
By Kelli
First, you simply must read this book. There's no way around that.
Ali and Nino is a lyrically written story of love and war, honor and country, cultural blend and clash set in WWI-era Transcaucasia (ie, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia). The novel has simply *all* the elements of greatness: well-developed characters, a vivid setting, a gripping plot, and an examination of larger themes -- all crammed into this little-known, relatively compact work.
Love in the face of cultural obstacles, in the face of war and patriotic duty. Love in its innocence, its longing, its maturity. Love between people, love for a people, and the tragedy of a lost world. It's really an incredible, incredible book -- one which, despite its age, seems more capable of tackling the issues we see in our own post-cold-war world than any other book I've read.
Read this book. It will delight and reward you.

A true treasure
By A Customer
I remember checking this book out of the library over and over again in junior high 25 years ago and it was indeed spellbinding. A current article in National Georgraphic on Iran brought back memories of this lovely book and I decided to see if it was still in print. I'm thrilled it has been "rediscovered."

From AudioFile
Chief Inspector Maigret has been powerless to crack the bewildering "daylight" jewelry heist cases happening in Paris for more than twenty years. Clifford Norgate's mastery at capturing Maigret, his associates, and the contemptuous suspects encountered throughout the story is outstanding. His impeccable dialects provide authenticity to this absorbing mystery. As he escorts the listener through interrogations, grisly discoveries, and Maigret's thought processes, the city of Paris and the characters spring to life with every word. Maigret Bides His Time: well-written and a most intriguing criminal investigation
By Merrily Baird
"Maigret Bides his Time," translated from "La Patience de Maigret," concerns one of the longest running and most intractable criminal cases Commissaire Jules Maigret has faced as chief of the criminal division in the Paris Police Judiciare. Numerous smash and grab robberies have plagued the capital's jewelry stores, and, although Maigret suspects that the wheelchair-bound and elderly Manuel Palmari is the mastermind, years of surveillance and interrogations have produced no actionable evidence. All this begins to change once Palmari is assassinated at home, and Maigret and his junior inspectors have cause to question the residents of the apartment house where Palmari lived.

Many Maigret novels focus on recreating the life of the deceased. In contrast, "Maigret Bides His Time" intrigues the reader by demonstrating the way in which the Commissaire's personal knowledge of Paris's underworld benefits the investigation and by Maigret's logic in defining what skills were needed to support such an ambitious jewelry theft endeavor. A most welcome additional feature concerns the World War II-related backgrounds of several secondary players, something relatively rare in the Maigret mysteries despite the fact that many were written during the war years or soon after.

This is Maigret's opportunity to unravel a mystery that has been bothering him for 20 years. This story has all the classic elements that Jules Maigret fans love.

A detective plagued by jewelry store heists in daylight
By Midwest Book Review
Georges Simenon's Maigret Bides His Time provides an unabridged Jules Maigret mystery telling of a detective plagued by jewelry store heists - in the daylight. The Parisian inspector has his hands full, and Clifford Norgate's background in Shakespearean drama brings the underlying drama to life in this mystery.

The eighth edition of Applied Mathematics for Business, Economics, Life Sciences, and Social Sciences is designed for a two-term (or condensed one-term) course in finite mathematics and calculus and for students who have had 12-2 years of high school algebra or the equivalent. The choice and independence of topics make the text readily adaptable to a variety of courses (see the Chapter Dependency Chart on page x). It is one of five books in the authors' college mathematics series.

Improvements in this edition evolved out of the generous response from a large number of users of the last and previous editions as well as survey results from instructors, mathematics departments, course outlines, and college catalogs. Fundamental to a book's growth and effectiveness is classroom use and feedback. Now in its eighth edition, Applied Mathematics for Business, Economics, Life Sciences, and Social Sciences has had the benefit of having a substantial amount of both.

Excellent book for both beginner and experienced
By lifelongstudent
This is an excellent book. I have an engineering degree but since I was out of college for almost 10 years I needed a book to go through every topic in such a way that doesn't look basic but refresh all that I learned back in college. This book served the purpose. Moreover it touched topics like Markov Chains and Stochastic processes. It also explains linear programming (simplex and M method) in a very simple way with tons of examples. Examples have been very well chosen and every intricate concept is explained by going through the examples step by step.

Concept of probability is very well explained in this book. Baye's theorem is a piece of cake if you read this book. Overall, I'm very happy that I chose this book.

A great textbook for end users of mathematics
By A Customer
This book is just very good. It is a top-quality, superbly on target solution for end users of mathematics. I had selected and subsequently used it as a textbook for a freshman calculus course aimed at prospective economics majors at an Ivy League college. My goal was to present a broad scope of the fundamental concepts of applied mathematics relevant to the social sciences, while keeping the exposition at the basic level of mathematical sophistication. Given the objective, one needs a textbook that would replace most proofs with carefully chosen exemplifications, rely on technically undemanding exercises, but enable the teacher to introduce concepts at a lively pace and tie them to interesting applications. This textbook meets all the requirements.
Our course used essentially only the more advanced parts of the book. The selection of topics was systematized by the idea of staying focused on some of the basic mathematical methods designed for solving broadly understood problems of optimization, extrapolation, and prediction. Formally, students were required to learn algorithmic skills, like finding extrema of functions of one and several variables, linear programming, basic routines for ordinary differential equations and Markov chains. Primary emphasis was put on understanding the differences and similarities between continuous and discrete, deterministic and random. The book served us well and we felt truly rewarded by its amazing collection of well selected, well thought-through real-life applications. I am enthusiastic about this book and so were very many of my students.

Broken Stone (Souls Of The Stones Book 3), by Kelly Walker

UNABLE TO AVOID HER DESTINY ANY LONGER, Emariya has become the leader her mother always envisioned. Before she can focus on embracing her gifts to unify her three lands, she must first stop her own land from dissolving into civil war. Spurred by her brother’s devious policies and thirst for power, the people of the Uplands have surged into revolt. If Emariya cannot convince her own people to stand down and follow her, she will never convince her uncle she can lead all three lands. And he’s only given her half a year to do it.

AS SHE TRIES TO WIN HER OWN PEOPLE'S HEARTS, the love of her life, Torian Ahlen begins to lose his mind. While Torian is driven into a dark depression by his visions of Terin, Emariya realizes the only way to bring him back from the brink is to confront her brother once and for all and rescue Torian's sister. Unfortunately, because of the pull of the stones, his sister isn’t sure she wants to be rescued.

IF EMARIYA IS TO HAVE ANY CHANCE AT SAVING TORIAN'S MIND and his sister’s virtue, she will have to go directly to the source, those that bestowed the gifts (or curse) in the first place. But will whoever is waiting at The Cradle Of The Three be willing to help her? Her only chance to get Terin away from Reeve will be to nullify the pull of the Stones, accepting whatever changes that may mean for her and Torian.

From the Author
Souls of the Stones follows Emariya Warren as she navigates the three divided lands of her world, as well as the three families striving for control. The series incorporates traditional fantasy elements such as prophecy and magic with a love story that transcends genre and time.
Books in the Souls of the Stones Series:

The main trilogy is complete, and it includes the following titles:

  • Cornerstone
  • Second Stone
  • Broken Stone
  • Related works include:
    • Gifted Stone - A pair of short stories (Best read any time after Cornerstone)
    • Severed Stone - A prequel novella  (It can be read at any time in the series, but fits best any time after Second Stone.)
    • Jaded Stone -  A prequel - Valencia's story(Can be read at any time in the series, but fits best post Second Stone.)

    FAQ:

    Will there be more books?
While Broken Stone completed Emariya's storyline and wrapped up the major plot threads, there are still a lot of characters in Souls of the Stones who have more to say. I have every intention of telling some of their stories.

    Recommend reading this series!
    By mary kay davis
I really have enjoyed all three books in this Stone series, and plan on reading more of Kelly Walker 's books, and have already mentioned them to another reader. I thought the balance of fantasy and romance with a realistically envisioned world was compelling and sincere in it's portrayal of the characters emotions in dealing with the dramas and interactions of their relationships. The first book was offered as a free download on my new Kindle, but I downloaded and bought the second and third book almost immediately upon starting the first book, because I was already hooked! Thank you Kelly for such a completely entertaining world of characters!

Great End to this YA Fanasy Series.
    By Sarah
(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis. Thanks to Kelly Walker, All Night Reads, and Netgalley.)
This is the third book in the `Souls of the Stones' series, and kicks off where book 2 `Second Stone' left off.
**Warning - some unavoidable spoilers for books 1 and 2 `Cornerstone', and `Second Stone'.**
Now that Emariya and Torian have bound the lines, it's up to them to rescue Torian's sister Terin, who has been kidnapped by Emariya's brother Reeve.
How can Emariya and Torian stand against Reeve though when no-one believes that her father renounced him, and named Emariya as his heir? How can they get Terin away from Reeve when the stones continue to pull her to him? And will the prophecy about the three stones prove true?

This was another great book, and a great ending to this fantasy trilogy.

Emariya continued to be strong in this book, and she proved time and time again how much she loved Torian, and how hard she was prepared to fight for what was right. Torian and Emariya's friends proved their loyalty to her, and it was nice to see such a strong female lead.

I liked the storyline in this final book, although there was more to the story than I expected there to be, with Emariya and Torian having to make yet another journey, and being tested once more.
The author kept the suspense of what would happen all the way through this book, with things not being wrapped up once and for all until the very end of the book. I didn't expect the end to come quite the way it did, but everything worked out for the best, and you can't beat a happy ending!

Overall; this book really was a fitting end to a wonderful series, and I will definitely be reading whatever the author writes next!
    7.25 out of 10.

    Great ending
    By Kindle Customer
I adored how this series ends. Torian and Riya are a perfect couple. And Garith, Alara and kahl were awesome characters to get to know along with Jessa and Blaine. At one point I didn't want to read anymore, what The Three did was so awful.

    Passed!
    By Cassie K.
Passed the PHR today! Used only this book. I read it from cover to cover, and used the supplementary online materials and assessment tests. There were definitely some questions I was unfamiliar with on the test, but overall, I recommend this book for at least a part of your PHR study.

Not Sufficient for SPHR But a Good Resource
    By Mina Alexander
If you are preparing for the SPHR, this book is not enough. I used this book (self-study) and bought the SPHR 150-question practice test from HRCI two weeks prior to the test and passed. This book is great to gain most of the knowledge needed to pass the exam, but it won't prepare you for the SPHR exam questions. The reason for this is that its practice tests are more like what you'd see on the PHR and not the SPHR. SPHR questions are more analytical and real life scenarios as opposed to just knowledge-based. The questions are MUCH harder and many times 2 answers look correct (from my experience). If I didn't purchase the HRCI practice tests, I'm not sure I would have passed as I wouldn't have been prepared for the question format (please also note that many resources that claim to provide free SPHR practice tests are in reality PHR ones). Some of the questions on these HRCI practice tests actually appeared on the exam but were worded differently. Finally, some of the subjects weren't covered in this book to the extent that they should have been. For example, the SPHR had many questions on the mergers/acquisitions process, which wasn't in the book at all. So if you're looking for a good resource for SPHR, this would be a start but I would strongly recommend looking at HRCI tools as although they are pricey, they will prepare you well.
