Amazon.com Review
In Sue Monk Kidd's The Secret Life of Bees, 14-year-old Lily Owen, neglected by her father and isolated on their Georgia peach farm, spends hours imagining a blissful infancy when she was loved and nurtured by her mother, Deborah, whom she barely remembers. These consoling fantasies are her heart's answer to the family story that as a child, in unclear circumstances, Lily accidentally shot and killed her mother. All Lily has left of Deborah is a strange image of a Black Madonna, with the words "Tiburon, South Carolina" scrawled on the back. The search for a mother, and the need to mother oneself, are crucial elements in this well-written coming-of-age story set in the early 1960s against a background of racial violence and unrest. When Lily's beloved nanny, Rosaleen, manages to insult a group of angry white men on her way to register to vote and has to skip town, Lily takes the opportunity to go with her, fleeing to the only place she can think of--Tiburon, South Carolina--determined to find out more about her dead mother. Although the plot threads are too neatly trimmed, The Secret Life of Bees is a carefully crafted novel with an inspired depiction of character. The legend of the Black Madonna and the brave, kind, peculiar women who perpetuate Lily's story dominate the second half of the book, placing Kidd's debut novel squarely in the honored tradition of the Southern Gothic. --Regina Marler

From Publishers Weekly
Honey-sweet but never cloying, this debut by nonfiction author Kidd (The Dance of the Dissident Daughter) features a hive's worth of appealing female characters, an offbeat plot and a lovely style. It's 1964, the year of the Civil Rights Act, in Sylvan, S.C. Fourteen-year-old Lily is on the lam with motherly servant Rosaleen, fleeing both Lily's abusive father T. Ray and the police who battered Rosaleen for defending her new right to vote. Lily is also fleeing memories, particularly her jumbled recollection of how, as a frightened four-year-old, she accidentally shot and killed her mother during a fight with T. Ray. Among her mother's possessions, Lily finds a picture of a black Virgin Mary with "Tiburon, S.C." on the back so, blindly, she and Rosaleen head there. It turns out that the town is headquarters of Black Madonna Honey, produced by three middle-aged black sisters, August, June and May Boatwright. The "Calendar sisters" take in the fugitives, putting Lily to work in the honey house, where for the first time in years she's happy. But August, clearly the queen bee of the Boatwrights, keeps asking Lily searching questions. Faced with so ideally maternal a figure as August, most girls would babble uncontrollably. But Lily is a budding writer, desperate to connect yet fiercely protective of her secret interior life. Kidd's success at capturing the moody adolescent girl's voice makes her ambivalence comprehensible and charming. And it's deeply satisfying when August teaches Lily to "find the mother in (herself)" a soothing lesson that should charm female readers of all ages. (Jan. 28)Forecast: Blurbs from an impressive lineup of women writers Anita Shreve, Susan Isaacs, Ursula Hegi pitch this book straight at its intended readership. It's hard to say whether confusion with the similarly titled Bee Season will hurt or help sales, but a 10-city author tour should help distinguish Kidd. Film rights have been optioned and foreign rights sold in England and France.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-Lily Owens, 14, is an emotionally abused white girl living with her cold, uncaring father on a peach farm in rural South Carolina. The memory of her mother, who was accidentally killed in Lily's presence when she was four, haunts her constantly. She has one of her mother's few possessions, a picture of a black Madonna with the words, Tiburon, South Carolina, written on the back. Lily's companion during her sad childhood has been Rosaleen, the black woman hired to care for her. Rosaleen, in a euphoric mood after the passing of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, goes to town to register to vote and insults one of the town's most racist residents. After she is beaten up and hospitalized, Lily decides to rescue her and they go to Tiburon to search for memories of her mother. There they are taken in by three black sisters who are beekeepers producing a line of honey with the Black Madonna label. While racial tensions simmer around them, the women help Lily accept her loss and learn the power of forgiveness. There is a wonderful sense of the strength of female friendship and love throughout the story.

A Heartwarming Read
By Kelly Budd
The Secret Life of Bee's is an enduring story set on a southern bee farm. The characters will enlighten and warm your heart. The Secret Life of Bee's is similar to many southern stories; however, the bee lore that Kidd interjects throughout makes the book unique and interesting. The Secret Life of Bee's is a heartwarming, feel good read. There are universal lessons about family and self throughout.
The main character, Lily Owens is fleeing an abusive father and an all-consuming truth surrounding her mother's death. The Secret Life of Bee's is set in the 1960's when racial tensions and violence were at an all time high. Lily and her caretaker Rosaleen, leave town after a violent encounter with racists while Rosaleen was attempting to exercise some of her newly granted freedoms.
Since the death of her mother, Lilly has a few precious clues as to her last days. The clues lead Lily and Rosaleen to Tiburon, South Carolina where they meet the `calendar sisters', May, June, and August Boatwright. The Boatwright sisters operate a successful Bee farm. Lily and Rosaleen are welcomed to the farm with open arms. Through her work on the farm, Lily is able to examine her past and begin to trust as she finds love again.
The Secret Life of Bee's is the story of mothers. The reader will travel with Lily as she experiences each of the four remarkable women ~ Rosaleen, May, June, and August. Each of these women is a teacher and guide to Lily. It is through her experiences that she is able to discern that a mother is more than just a biological bond.
A great debut for Sue Monk Kidd. I cannot help thinking that I would have loved to learn more about Boatwright sisters...maybe there is room for another story!

By A Customer
I gave this book to my 15 year old daughter to read and she came back after finishing it exclaiming, " All those mothers!" Motherhood and its powerful influence (both good and bad) on each of us is a central theme to the story and the quest for all that a mother implies (safety, acceptance, unconditional love)draws the reader immediately to Lily Owen, the 14 year old narrator. I thought this book had beautiful imagery, a nice balance of goodness overcoming loss, and most of all conceded to the power of redemption. Sue Monk Kidd did a wonderful job weaving the racial tensions of the 1960's into the voice of the main character and bringing us, the reader, along for the ride as the young girl discovers what it feels like to be discriminated against herself, the dangers of racial inequality, and the basic human elements that bind us to each other despite color or class. This story is about a journey of growth and addresses that fundamental need in each of us to find answers to the questions of who we are. I have found, months later, that The Secret Life of Bees is still with me and I recommend it over and over again.

As sweet as honey.
By Ken Ebert
I mean, literally, this book is as sweet as honey, which is spread throughout the book. I now have a whole new appreciation for the work bees do. But while bees and honey may be the back drop to this wonderful story, there is much more. It starts with the painful memory of a young adolescent girl, Lily, who discovers bees in her wall, and these bees and some belongings of her deceased mother lead her on a path of discovery. Lily, as narrator, tells a wonderful joyous and painful story, filled with many life lessons. The ideas that we all have a mother inside of us to be discovered and that life isn't perfect are good reminders. This is a wonderful book, one that is hard to put down. It tugs at one's heart in many ways and Sue Monk Kidd brings the characters to life in a very realistic way.l

I am not from the south and did not run away from home, but I grew up in the 1960s and spent much time in a neighborhood where mothers were very important. Like Lily, I was fortunate to be surrounded by many loving mothers who looked after all the kids on our street. This book reminded me of that time.

I definitely recommend this book

Review

The book offers a coherent argument against inherited theories of "organismic vitalism"...and evinces the literary idiom of postmodernism.

(Choice)

Cheah's text is one of those rare occasions where scholarship and political commitment become supplementary to each other.

(Baidik Bhattcharya Interventions)

Cheah does a superb job in outlining the organic and ultimately cultural forms the struggle for freedom has taken.

(Gregory Jusdanis Research in African Literatures)

Pheng Cheah traces a constellation of concepts...with confidence

(Matthew Scherer MLN)

Review

A rare scholarly achievement, Spectral Nationality adds a critical new dimension to the work from which it draws much of its inspiration, namely Derrida's Spectres of Marx. Cheah's exemplary account of the development of organicism from Kant through Marx will doubtless change the manner in which this difficult and delicate topic will henceforth be discussed.

(Peter Fenves, professor of German and comparative literature, Northwestern University)

Pheng Cheah has written an important book that will genuinely stir up productive discussion, breathe new life into postcolonial discourse, and raise the subject to a new and necessary level of serious engagement.

(Harry Harootunian, professor of history and director of East Asian studies, New York University, and author of History's Disquiet)

Pheng Cheah's stimulating contribution to postcolonial studies stands out on two counts: for the sustained attention it gives to European thought and for shifting the focus of the discussion to Southeast Asia and Kenya. It is the combination of these two elements that gives Spectral Nationality its distinctive vigor and merit.

(Dipesh Chakrabarty, Lawrence A. Kimpton Distinguished Service Professor of History and South Asian Languages and Civilizations, University of Chicago)

Spectral Nationality is a beautiful and startling book. It is dazzlingly, relentlessly erudite, but also remarkably clear and simple in its focus: how freedom has been pursued in the past and how we can best realize it today. This is an extremely important intellectual and political project.

(Michael Hardt, associate professor of literature and Romance studies, Duke University, and coauthor of Empire)

Elegantly argued, original, and deeply insightful, Pheng Cheah's new book situates nationalism at the heart of the Western intellectual tradition. Its examination of organicism shows this to be anything but an innocent metaphor. Philosophy's dualisms did not remain stable, and Western philosophy did not stay at home. Cheah brilliantly shows how its implications intertwined with different material circumstances and cultural traditions in postcolonial Asia and Africa. Bildung and Bandung were not quite worlds apart. A must read.

(Craig Calhoun, professor of sociology, New York University, and president of the Social Science Research Council)

About the Author

Pheng Cheah is assistant professor in the department of rhetoric at the University of California at Berkeley. He is co-editor of Cosmopolitics: Thinking and Feeling beyond the Nation, Thinking through the Body of the Law and Grounds of Comparison: Around the Work of Benedict Anderson (forthcoming).

Well worth it
By JS
I am responding largely to the previous review of this book that takes Cheah to task for failing "to ponder the potential contribution of capitalism and less radically egalitarian measures to achieve his ends"! Ha! That reviewer is welcome to his opinion, of course, but due to his obviously conservative agenda, I think it is quite unfortunate that to date his review is the only one of Cheah's book. No, Cheah is not a conservative - and more power to him. In my more progressive opinion, Cheah's book contains an important and challenging theorization of nationalism and cosmopolitanism. I have found this book very useful for my own thinking about freedom, and for helping my students grasp the limitations of earlier canonical writings on nationalism, e.g. Benedict Anderson and Partha Chatterjee. I think of the book as a work of critical theory that dovetails nicely with more anthropological scholarship on similar themes, such as that by Elizabeth Povinelli and James C. Scott. Of course it's not favoring capitalism and isn't interested in totally eschewing 'egalitarianism' - why would a work of postcolonial studies do that? I believe this book needs a broader readership. In short, unless you're an arch conservative like that other reviewer, you'll probably get something out of the book! (And even if you are like that other reader, well perhaps (?) it will open your mind a little.)

A Critique "Postcolonial" Nationalism
By Lee Cheek
Cheah (Univ. of California, Berkeley) attempts to assimilate the insight of several movements within contemporary scholarship, including cultural studies and deconstructionism, in order to articulate a defense of a properly defined "postcolonial" nationalism. The book offers a coherent, albeit questionable, argument against inherited theories of "organismic vitalism" and a justification for a new nationalism based on indigenous cultural sources; and it develops a political theory of freedom predicated on the author's definition of the concept. The book is divided into two parts. The first half serves as a critique of freedom as a faulty organic construct in the thought of Kant, Hegel, Fichte, Marx, and socialist political philosophy. The second half is a search for thinkers who integrate their own cultural milieu into the context of nationalism, utilizing figures from Southeast Asia (Pramoedya) and Kenya (Ngugi). The work is heavily influenced by the writings of Jacques Derrida, Frantz Fanon, and Amilcar Cabral, and evinces the literary idiom of postmodernism. The author's reluctance to ponder the potential contribution of capitalism and less radically egalitarian measures to achieve his ends presents a major obstacle to his enterprise. Summing Up: Optional. Graduate and research collections.

Useful tips for the beginner artists
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:31057701]]Telling a good story is an incredibly difficult. In this book, Will Eisner shares with readers some of things to be aware of when tackling storytelling using comics.

He talks about techniques to use to help build a more convincing story. This would include comic tools like lettering, building momentum, using visual clues and writing. Examples include how props (i.e. guns) are held to reveal human characteristics.

There are lessons on how to engage readers, how readers think and mistakes to avoid. These are followed with lots of comic strip examples -- including a selection from different comic artists. Unfortunately, they aren't captioned page by page like it was done on his other books. The comic examples are great, you know it but you don't know why they work.

The book doesn't really go in depth into all aspects of storytelling. There's no talk on character development, story arcs, conflict management and specific story elements and tools.

Overall, this is still a very useful book for anyone who's just starting out and thinking of drawing their own comics.

Violence, Hospitality, and the Cross: Reappropriating the Atonement Tradition, by Hans Boersma

The cross is central to understanding Christian theology. But is it possible that our postmodern setting requires a new model of understanding the cross?

Hans Boersma's Violence, Hospitality, and the Cross proposes an understanding of the atonement that is sensitive both to the Christian tradition and to the postmodern critiques of that tradition. His fresh approach draws on the rich resources of the Christian tradition in its portrayal of God's hospitality in Jesus Christ.

Review
"This is generous evangelicalism at its best....Boersma does a fine job of bringing Scripture and tradition to bear on the contemporary situation all for the sake of the church's participation in the divine hospitality."

Hans Boersma (PhD, University of Utrecht) holds the J. I. Packer Chair of Theology at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia. He is the author or editor of several books, including A Hot Pepper Corn: Richard Baxter's Doctrine of Justification in Its Seventeenth-Century Context of Controversy.

Excellent Introduction to an Important Discussion
By Michael J. Pahls
Boersma's volume represents an extremely helpful introduction to an important theological discussion and a welcome reappropriation of the traditional Reformation-era penal substituition theory.

A couple of issues to ponder as you read:

I am still mulling over the particulars, but I'm not sure if Boersma does sufficient justice to the divinity of Jesus and the cross as God's "self"-offering. Historically, the penal-substitution theory can tend to emphasize too much God's violence against Jesus as "other" to the neglect of the ontological unity of Father, Son, and Spirit.

Second, by starting with a philosophical analysis of "hospitality" drawn from Levi-Strauss, Derrida, Levinas, et.al, Boersma risks the imposition of non-biblical concepts of hospitality on the biblical text. This is not necessarily the case, but I am concerned that contemporary modernist/postmodernist agendas not drive this debate as much as Scripture and Tradition. While interacting with contemporary thought, theology must retain its integrity as a distinctive language game with a unique grammar and vocabulary.

Likewise with Boersma's employment of the munus triplex christi as a macroscheme to reconcile moral influence, Eastern (Christus Victor), and Western (Penal) concepts of the Atonement. This manner of composing Christology, while being rooted biblically, is a 16th Century strategy of John Calvin. Hence the reconciliation of biblical, patristic, and Medieval data under this rubric seems potentially anachronistic.

That said, however, the Church should welcome Boersma's relatively new theological voice. As a Reformed evangelical, he is to be particularly commended for integrating Roman Catholic, Orthodox, anabaptist, and pentecostal voices into his treatment of the discussion. While not uncritical of his own Dutch-Calvinist heritage (note his discussion of Canon #3 of Dordt), Boersma displays it in its best and most catholic light and successfully overcomes the confessional inbreeding that plagues most conservative Presbyterian and Reformed theologians.

Warmly recommended reading!

An excellent read regarding the Atonement
By M. A. Lafler
This book gives an ecumenical overview of the three traditional views of the atonement: Moral-Influence, Penal-Substitution, and Christus-Victor. With much reliance on St. Irenaeus, Boersma approaches the topic from a Reformed view but holds value in all traditions. He discusses ideas regarding the relationship between violence and hospitality from modern and patristic levels. A bold book in the face of the political and theological challenges of today, Boersma does a fine job at portraying an ecumenical Reformed approach. I highly recommend this book.

Helpful, regardless of stance
By Linda B. Nelson
It's not that I agree with all the author's conclusions; but this is a very thorough, clear, well-written argument. It is worth a read to understand what many do propose as atonement theory.
