Joelle is amazing and incredibly wise for someone so young.

This may be my favorite book of 2009 - and on into 2010. WOW! Dr. Joelle Jay is a master coach who has worked with executives around the country. The insights and wisdom she has provides in this book, along with the tools available in the book and on the accompanying website are incredible. As Joelle says, "This book isn't about leading your organization or leading your team. It's about leading yourself." Get this book ordered right away. You'll want to immerse yourself in it as you allow her lessons to seep into your pores. I definitely give this a 5-star recommendation, no question.

I believe I've purchased at least 20 so far through Amazon to give to friends, associates, and even a family member!

An Important Book for Every Leader.

I find Dr. Jay's curiosity and authenticity absolutely fascinating in The Inner Edge. She takes her readers on a very important journey of learning more about who they are as leaders. This book just won't let the reader get away with the sort of surface look at the circumstances he/she has created on the "outer edge." Instead, Dr. Jay gently forces her readers to examine their "inner edge." She guides the often rushed and harried leader on an exploration of how to be more true to that "inner edge" and show the world who they really are. Readers of this book who dive in with courage will emerge a more authentic and fulfilled leader. Every leader should take the time to invest in themselves and take the passage through The Inner Edge.

The "Inner Edge" provides more than I anticipated. The material is good for reflection and reinforcing the actions I need to take for this new year. This is not a book to race through just one time. This book entices you to think about who you are and what you really want, not just react to situations placed in front of you. The message of Joelle Jay helps you to clarify your own needs, create detailed action steps, and then practice essential principles. Excellent examples are given that apply to many leaders who have a different leadership style or situation. What more could you ask for in this unique and well written book about personal leadership? This is definitely my book of choice for the year 2010.

"There is a science to matching people." Jessica Carter tucked a lock of blond hair behind her ear and lifted her computer, a flat, all-in-one device shaped like a clipboard, so that it obscured her figure. Pity, Stavros was enjoying the look of her. Even if she was starch and pearls, rather than spandex and diamonds.

She continued, her eyes never leaving the screen. "A matching of social status, values, education and life experience is very important to creating a successful, enduring marriage. I think most match services realize that." She paused and took a breath, pink lips parting slightly, her green eyes locking with his just for a moment before dropping back down. "However, I have taken things a step further. Matching is not just a science. It's an art. The art is in the attraction, and it's not to be underestimated."

Prince Stavros Drakos, second son of the Kyonosian royal family, and named heir to the throne, leaned back in his chair, his hands behind his head. "I am not so much concerned about the art, Ms. Carter. The essentials are general compatibility and suitability for my country. Childbearing hips would help."

Her pale cheeks flushed crimson, her lush mouth tightening. "Isn't that what all men want?"

"I'm not sure. And frankly, I don't care. Most men don't have to consider the entire populace of their country when they go about selecting a wife."

But it didn't matter what most men did. He wasn't most men. Ever since he'd been forced to step into the place of his older brother, he had been different. It didn't matter what normal was, it didn't matter what he wanted. All that mattered was that he be the best king possible for Kyonos.

His methods might be unorthodox, and they might grieve his father, but what he did, he did for the good of his people. It just wasn't in his nature to be too traditional.

She blew out a breath. "Of course." She smiled, bright and pristine, like a toothpaste commercial. She was so clean and polished she hardly seemed like a real woman, more like a throwback from a 1950s television show. In Technicolor. "I… Not that I'm complaining of course, but why exactly have you hired me to find you a wife? I've read the newspaper articles written about you and you seem perfectly able to attract women on all your own."

"When I want to find a suit for an event, I hire I stylist. When I need to organize a party, I hire an events coordinator. Why should this be any different?"

She tilted her head to the side. Her hair was in a low, neat bun, her dress high-collared, buttoned up and belted at the waist. A place for everything and everything in its place. She all but begged to be disheveled.

Any other time, he might have done so.

"I see you have a…practical outlook on things," she said.

"I have a country to run, I don't have time to deal with peripherals."

"I've compiled a list of candidates, to be refined, of course."

He took the monitor from her hand and hit the home button, tapping a few icons and not managing to find a list.

"What is this?"

She took the device back from him. "It's a tablet computer. Shall I put that technologically savvy women need not apply?"

"Not necessary, but you can put down that women with smart mouths need not apply."

Her full lips curved slightly. "Someone has to keep you in line."

"No one has to keep me in line. I'm going to be king." That hadn't kept Xander in line. In fact, he'd pulled himself straight out of line and put Stavros in front. But Stavros wouldn't falter. He wouldn't quit.

One well-shaped eyebrow lifted upward. "Oh? Is that so." She typed something on her onscreen keyboard.

"What? What did you write?"

"Strong tyrannical tendencies. A possible negative in social interactions, possible positive in BA."

"BA?"

"Bedroom activities. It's shorthand. Don't dwell on it," she said, her tone snappy. "I told you attraction is considered. That said, do you require a virgin bride, Prince Drakos?"

"Stavros will do, and no, I don't." He shouldn't be surprised by her frankness. She had a reputation for being bold, brash even. She also had a reputation for setting up unions that had led to successful mergers and increased fortunes. She was a relationships strategist, more than a matchmaker, and he'd been assured that there was no one better. She knew the rules of society, knew the function a practical marriage served.

His marriage, and securing it, meant nothing to him personally, and being able to pawn off the legwork on Jessica Carter had been too good of an idea to pass up. And if the press happened to pick it up, all the better. He had a reputation for doing things differently. Doing things his way. Turning away from how his father had run the country.

And this was as far from something his father would do as he could think of.

"That's good," she said. "It's always awkward to ask women to submit proof of sexual history."

"Do you do that?"

"I have. Though not just women."

"Who?" he asked.

"Ah, now, if I told you I would have to kill you. I operate on the basis of strict anonymity. Unless those involved are seeking publicity, I don't talk about my clients."

"But word does spread," he said. He'd seen an old school friend three weeks earlier, and the smugness had practically been dripping from him as he stood there with his new fiancée. Oxford educated. And a model. She was everything he'd asked for. Beauty and brains. And who had accomplished the feat?

Jessica Carter.

The woman the media called the World's Most Elite Matchmaker. She catered to billionaires. CEOs, tycoons. Royalty. And she was renowned for making matches that lasted.

That was what he needed. He'd given up on allowing himself any sort of personal interest in the selection of his bride ever since he'd discovered that it was likely he would be assuming the throne for his absentee brother. The death of his mother, nineteen years ago, had shaken his people to the core. The abandonment of his older brother, the rightful heir, had caused months of instability. Stocks had tanked, trade had stalled, the housing market going into a deep freeze.

Why had the future ruler really left? Would he truly abdicate? What secrets were the Drakos family guarding beneath that veneer of polish and old world sophistication?

He had been determined to undo all of the unrest brought about by his brother. And he had done it. He'd revitalized Thysius, the largest city on the island, with posh hotels and trendy boutiques. He'd brought in new revenue by having the seat of his corporation on the island, a country much too small to house companies the size of his, when the owner wasn't the crown prince.

He'd done much to drag his country back from the brink. From the age of eighteen his entire life had altered so that it revolved around his homeland. He hadn't had the luxury of being a boy. Hadn't had the luxury of feeling fear or sadness. He'd learned early on that feeling had no place in his world. A ruler, an effective ruler, had to be above such things.

"I understand that this is a big deal," she said. "Not just in terms of your country, but for you. She is going to be your wife."

He shrugged. "An acquisition I've long known I would make."

Jessica let out a long, slow breath. "Mr… .Prince Drakos, will you please stop being so candid? It's remarkably hard to sell a man who clearly has no interest in romantic love."

"Try this for a tagline—marry the jaded prince and receive a title, a small island, a castle and a tiara. That might make up for it."

"Money can't buy love."

"Nice. Trite, overdone, possible copyrighted by The Beatles, but nice. You might consider tacking this onto the end—love doesn't buy happiness."

Something changed in Jessica's eyes, a shard of ice in the deep green that had been warm a moment before. "That's for damn sure, but we're talking about putting together a sales pitch. And you aren't helping."

He shifted. "Can't you put something in my file about my impeccable table manners?"

"I haven't witnessed them, and I don't lie. You're my client, yes, but there is a pool of women I work with on a regular basis, and I have great loyalty to them."

It was intriguing. The way she flashed hot and cold. The way she presented herself, nearly demure, and then she opened that mouth. And such a lovely mouth, too. She was holding it tight. What would it take to make it soften?

The idea made his stomach tighten.

"And you think one of them is my queen?"

"If she isn't, I'll walk through all of Europe beating gold-plated bushes until a member of minor nobility falls out. I won't stop until we get this settled."

"You are supposed to be the best. You did manage to get a confirmed bachelor friend of mine to settle down."

"That's because, in my business, there's no settling. It's all about making the best match possible," she said brightly.

"Somehow, I do not share your enthusiasm."

"That's okay, I have enough for both of us. Now.. " She looked back down at h...

Slow beginning

This was a book I was excited about because every other reviewer gave it 5 stars. While most of these books are predictable, I read and love them for the journey into their love and their happily ever after.

I couldn't get into it in the beginning as most good books- it was slow with unnecessary explanations. The story of her breakup with her ex was told too many times- I got it the first time. I got that she was hurt, I got why she was prickly, I admired her courage and spunk. I didn't like the fact that at every turn we were reminded why she was prickly.

I didn't buy into this story and their love. He gave up too much of what drove him and what he always believed in. The matchmaker sleeps with her client while still setting her lover up with dates, a sheikh who needs an heir for the country but is supposedly willing to give that up for love. While that is all nice and good, his initial reason for going to the matchmaker is for the progress of his country- so he falls in love but are we expected to believe that he no longer cares for the country.

A lot just didn't add up and so took away from the romance

A different kind of heroine

This is part of a series The Call of Duty that comprises two books and a novella. The other book is A Royal World Apart about this heroes sister. The theme of the series is about the conflict between the Call of Duty and the Call of the heart.

Prince Stavros Drakos needs a wife. She must be a suitable match for royalty, beautiful, intelligent, reasonably compatible and able to bear the heir to the throne. Jessica Carter is the best matchmaker in the world with a bank balance to prove it. She has a database full of potential Princesses and knows she could find just the right one for Stavros.

The hard part is going to be resisting the very charming Prince who lights fires long extinguished by the disaster of her marriage. Jessica is totally unsuitable for a bride but the Prince might just find her perfect for a final fling.

As a heroine, Jessica has a snarky way with her that makes for some delightful banter between her and Stavros. She is hiding a lot of pain behind that slightly eccentric style, in particular the one thing that will make it totally impossible for her to ever be the bride of a prince.

It is lovely to watch the supposedly heartless playboy prince brought to his knees by a woman who is his true match in every way but one. It is that one thing that will force him to consider whether his heart or his duty will win. This is an angsty read (my favourite kind) with lovely dollops of humour and nice sizzle.

Dissapointed

I blame the person who wrote a review for: Artists in crime, for my intense dissapointment. Marsh's work was compared favorably to A. Christie in that review. How sadly not true for me. I enjoy Christie but Marsh's silly phrases and characters, incomprehensible words even by the aid of a dictionary (tarradiddle, shooting stool), gushing old fashioned emotionality and naivity, do not appeal to me. I've read two books by Marsh. I hurried through the end of both to get rid of the "oh so boring" characters not because I was so excited over who the killer was. A dissapointing ending to say the least. "A do not read" is my opinion.

Classic example of the cozy mystery

Swevenings is a post card pretty little English village. The cottages are, with two known exceptions, tidy. The villagers are happy and like things just the way they are. Lord and Lady Lacklander are respected and admired. Then, suddenly after the death of the old lord things get messy. It turns out that Swevenings may look like heaven but is actually hiding a very painful and ugly secret, one that the old lord wanted exposed and one that costs his best friend his life.

You have the sensible nurse, the village drunk, the not crazy at all eccentric, the grande dame, the cloying young lovers and of course the bleached blonde outsider. Into this mix comes our handsome detective. He's not a flashy genius or a talented amateur. He's a cop, albeit one with a distinguished family background. His humor is gentle, his habits are unremarkable. He just keeps plugging away until he solves this case becuase it's his job and becuase the crime offends his sense of decency.

Scales of Justice is classic example of the cozy msystery and it pretty much unrolls the way you'd expect it to. By the end of the book things have been set right and life in Swevenings goes back to the bland sweetness of before. It's a pleasant way to spend a few hours.

Of Fish, Cats--And Murder

Swevenings is an isolated and insular English district where nothing unpleasant ever seems to happen--until the celebrated Lord Lacklander, on his death bed, passes his memoirs into the hands of Col. Cartarette. And when Col. Cartarette is found unexpectedly murdered on the banks of the Chyne River, Inspector Roderick Alleyn of Scotland Yard must determine whether foul play arises from an unknown explosive in Lacklander's memoirs or from a less obvious but no less lethal source.

As is often the case with Marsh, the beauty of the SCALES OF JUSTICE lies not so much in the unfolding plot as it does in the characters and their setting, and Swevenings and the Chyne Valley offers her tremendous scope, ranging from the formidable Lady Lacklander to the eccentrically cat-happy Mr. Danberry-Phinn to the alcoholic archer Commander Syce. Among her most interesting creations here is Nurse Kettle, a commonsense if excessively arch woman whose pleasing personality actually tempts Alleyn's sidekick Fox to reconsider his bachelor state!

Marsh often writes in such a way as to allow the reader to anticipate the killer, but such is not the case with SCALES OF JUSTICE, and many will find the means of the crime ingenious and the solution startling, with both a legendary fish locally known as "The Old 'Un" and the wandering feline Thomasina Twitchett providing unexpected clues along the way. A thoroughly enjoyable outing from start to finish.

About the Author
David P. Doane is Professor of Quantitative Methods in Oakland University's Department of Decision and Information Sciences. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics and economics at the University of Kansas and his PhD from Purdue University's Krannert Graduate School.

Lori E. Seward is an Instructor in the Decisions Sciences Department in the College of Business at The University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center. She earned her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Industrial Engineering at Virginia Tech. After several years working as a reliability and quality engineer in the paper and automotive industries, she earned her PhD from Virginia Tech.

Decision Science

My Prof really likes this book and has used previous editions too. My opinion - so far so good. In my limited review of the book the examples are good and the language is not technical. This course/book is part of my graduate studies in biology. The book is primarily business focused but with a profs help it is totally applicable to scientific data evaluation. Otherwise, it is approaching week 4 of 12 in my class and we haven't really relied on the book. My only real comment is to check with your campus bookstore/professor and see if it is supposed to come with a student version of Minitab (the software associated with the text). My online order did not come with Minitab, which I need for my stats course.

Good buy

Purchased this book used not new, for $73.99 from a private dealer on Amazon. I would have to say that the text is easy to understand, lots of material (lots) included and covered, the CD included is quite helpful as well, since it provides chapter highlights in PowerPoint, practice quizzes and homeworks, tutorials and samples for Excel, and the "MegaStat" add-on for the Excel program, which enables users to fully utilize Excel's ability to perform statistical calculations. Good purchase overall at the used purchase price, not sure if the case would be the same at the retail price, just make sure that the text includes the CD.

Excellent Text

I purchased this book as it was required by a course at North Carolina State University Statistics class. The book is easy to read, the explanations are clear and concise. Concepts are delivered well and highlighted in an easy to find format that makes it easy to skim back through important sections. For once I was not dreading cracking the book open every night for studying.

She was coming. From his office overlooking the sea, Count Alessandro Alonso Leopold Volta watched the launch approach the island that was home to Castello di Volta and the seat of the Volta family for more than five hundred years.

The boat hadn't even docked and already the bitter taste of bile hovered menacingly at the back of his throat.

He growled. He hated visitors, hated the way they brought the smell of the outside world with them, as if clinging to their very clothes. He hated their wide-eyed stares and their looks of horror when they first saw his scars, horror that bleached their faces white and sent their eyes skidding away to the floor or to the nearest work of art. Anywhere, it seemed, that wasn't his face.

But most of all he hated their pity, for the horror always gave way to pity.

He preferred the horror.

His hands curled into fists at his side. He didn't want anyone's pity.

He didn't want anyone. Period.

The launch slowed, rocking sideways on the bumpy water as it neared the dock and its wash caught up with it. He ground his teeth together and turned away, knowing that this time he had no choice. The package found tucked away in the caves deep beneath the castle had seen to that.

Why here? he asked himself again. Why, of all the places in the world, of all the places that would welcome the attention such a discovery would bring, why had what could be the lost pages from the fabled Salus Totus, the legendary Book of Wholeness, had to turn up here? When had fate taken to wearing a clown's mask?

He grunted his displeasure and dropped into the chair behind his desk. One week Professor Rousseau had promised him the job would take. No longer than one week to examine and document the pages, to determine whether they were genuine, and if so to stabilise their condition until they could be taken away and prepared for display. One short yet no doubt interminable week, with a stranger clattering around the castle, asking questions and expecting answers, and probably expecting him to be civil in the process.

He looked down at the file he'd been reviewing before the onshore wind had carried with it the thumping beat of an approaching engine, but his skin pulled achingly tight over his jaw and the words before him danced and spun and could have been printed in a different language for all the sense they made.

It could be worse, he rationalised, clamping down on the rising black cloud of his resentment, forcing himself to focus on the resume in his hands. He flipped the page, turning to the photograph of the woman he was expecting. Reputedly one of the best conservators in the business, Professor Rousseau boasted more than forty years' experience in the industry. And with short grey hair cut helmet-style around features that looked as if they'd been sculpted from parchment rather than skin, she looked the kind of person who enjoyed books more than people. If he had to put up with a visitor to his island, he could do much worse than this shrivelled-up scientist.

Maybe. And yet still this heavy sense of foreboding persisted in his gut; still the jagged line of his scar burned and stung, as if someone had dragged their nails down his face and chest and sliced open his wound.

One week, he thought, touching fingers to his burning cheek, half surprised when they didn't come away wet and sticky with blood. One week with a stranger poking around his castle, asking questions, getting under his feet. And whoever she was, and however she looked, it would be one week too long.

An Inspirational Tale of a Man and a Mouse

I've been a fan of Mr Monk's for quite a while. A page that I follow on Facebook once posted about all of the remarkable things he has done for the community (promoting equality, sheltering the homeless, and helping the community in general), and I had to start following his progress to see what extraordinary things he was going to do next.
Then one day, Mr Monk posted about his book, Chasing the Mouse. I contacted him and offered to help promote his story, so that people could become more informed with what steps he has taken in making the world a better place.
Chasing the Mouse tells the story of Nathan Monk, his childhood experience of being homeless, meeting his wife, and becoming a father (both literally and spiritually). Rebellion, love, life, family, broken promises, and creating lifelong memories are also key to this book, and he does a good job of letting that be known. Nathan is the narrator of the story, so each reader of Chasing the Mouse will receive a firsthand experience of the reality of growing up homeless. Now, he is not a professional author, and there are flaws that every book critic would just foam at the mouth to pick apart, but readers of this book must appreciate it for what it is. A man conveying his story in his own way, and telling the world what truly matters in life.
This book is a very powerful read. I enjoyed it very much, and I took a lot of meaningful aspects out of it, that I'm positive will come back to me throughout the years.
I will, and already have, recommended this book to friends, saying that there's a scene at the end that will nearly bring you to tears. (I know I came close!)
Now Nathan Monk spends most of his time with his family, and helps to take people off the streets and put them into homes, shelters, and communities. He does remarkable work, and if you follow his progress, I guarantee you will notice the impact he is making on the world.

You Need to Read This Book- Father Nathan Monk is a gifted writer

I started following Father Nathan Monk on Facebook because I am very interested in the subject of the homeless. This book was an eye opener. Although I volunteer with a mother and daughter non profit to help the homeless and their pets, I had never considered the long term ramifications of being chronically poor and homeless as a child. This is a rare glimpse in to the life of families that are continuously on the edge of losing their residence and how it affects the children later. Father Nathan Monk never goes overboard in blaming his parents, but is very gifted at showing those of us who were fortunate enough to never have to deal with this exactly what it was like for him. I would highly recommend this book to everyone. It should spark conversations about how we as a community and a nation need to step up and help families that teeter on the brink of being chronically homeless.
