Two pints of blood and a packet of crisps please

I am a middle-aged man who has never read a book about teenagers and vampires. The wrong person to review such a book, you may think ... or perhaps the best. I had no idea what to expect and took it all at face value. I do have some experience in the genre though. I was once a teenager myself and I have a teenage daughter the same age as the main character Samantha. I know how hormone-driven teenagers with big ideas and an inwardly-focussed approach to life, crave adventure and acceptance in any world other than that represented by their parents. Jennifer Loiske follows this theme and skilfully uses the vampire scenario as a vehicle to give a tired old subject vibrancy and bite. It could have been drugs, sex, alcohol or gangs. Jennifer chose vampires. Her subtle style (I stared at him, stunned, and tasted the word "friend" in my mouth) is easy to read and helps convey difficult emotions to the reader. The finest quality of any writer is to paint a clear picture in their readers' minds. Jennifer does this. I thoroughly recommend her book to people of all ages.

Club Number Five

This book was not what I was expecting, it was so much more. This book was amazing and filled with humor. I read this book in one sitting because I could not put it down. Samatha is obessed with fellow classmate Jonathan. She stalks him and then everything changes. She wakes up as a Vampire with no one to teach her the rules and way of Vampire life. Sam chases Jonathan around for answers suspecting he's the one that changed her, but what happens when a stranger appears and seems to know more about her than what she expects. Does he hold the answers shes seeking? She learns who she can trust and the rules of Vampire life the hard way. This book Sams journey to learning who she is and how to deal with it. I highly reccomend this book if your looking for a good read and laugh. This book will not let you down. I look forward to the next book in the series, Jennifer Loiske has done an amazing job.

CLUB NUMBER FIVE by Jennifer Loiske

My initial reaction on opening this book was "Does the world need another story about teenage vampires?" I was not convinced it would.

Samantha is just like any other 17 year-old adolescent as she discovers boys and one in particular, Jonathan, the hot guy every other girl in the school drools over.
Being a rebel Sam becomes besotted by Jonathan and stalks him one night as he goes to his mysterious club but the bouncer, understandably, won't allow Sam admittance.
So she hangs around outside where she is attacked.
Sam's only injury appears to be some small puncture marks on her neck and she immediately assumes she has been bitten by a vampire and blames Jonathan and his mysterious club where she unsuccessfully tries to enter several times.
Consumed by new-found deep emotions, and newly-acquired hormones, Sam lures her best friend Kate into her tangled web of bloodlust, which places Kate into mortal danger too.

Jennifer Loiske spectacularly describes the conflicts Sam faces within her new world as Sam defends her Vampire friends - sensitivity as Sam realises she is also a young woman with human desires too mixed with her duty to protect Kate and obligations to her family.

Sam eventually finds the man of her dreams...but sometimes dreams become nightmares.
I thoroughly commend this story to anyone as a compelling and highly entertaining read.

In 1991, the killing of Artie Mitchell by his older brother Jim stunned San Francisco. After all, the city's famous, or rather infamous, citizens had been innovative pornographers whose classic Behind the Green Door transformed the adult film industry and whose O'Farrell Theatre was the "Carnegie Hall of Public Sex." What led these colorful, unpredictable brothers to their tragically violent end? Journalist McCumber attempts to find the answers, but his book is an awkward mishmash of two separate stories. On the personal level, it is a classic Cain and Abel tale of the responsible older brother tired of taking care of an abusive sibling addicted to sex, drugs, and alcohol. On a broader front, the Mitchells' story symbolizes the sexual revolution of the 1960s and 1970s. Because McCumber tries to cram in so much material, parts of his book has a rushed, sketchy feel , while other sections (especially the chapter discussing Artie's relationship with women) bore the reader with excessive details. McCumber's occasional Hunter Thompson-type prose is distracting and weakens his book. Still, as the Mitchells knew, sex sells, so there probably will be demand.

Not written, transcripted

I managed until page 125 or so and couldn't read anymore. Sorry. The subject is interesting although somewhat "light" on the cultural revolution at the end of the 60s. What stopped me was the writing : this book is not written, it reads like a transcript from some audio tape. I never read anything so poorly written.

Dreadful writing

David McCumber, now at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, was an editor at the San Francisco Chronicle in the mid-1980s, where the late Hunter S. Thompson made a brief, unsuccessful stint as a columnist. McCumber knew the Mitchells and the O'Farrell Theatre; this book, therefore, perhaps was inevitable. McCumber is also a far better editor than writer, if this book is any indication.

The Mitchells, according to their biographers, saw an opportunity to make big money in porn and did just that. To the biographers, Jim and Artie were "Okie outlaw pornographers" who hired their good ol' boys from childhood as important members of their porn empire. The O'Farrell Theatre was (and remains) a mirrored house of sleaze where bikini-clad strippers hustled greenbacks from customers too shy and ugly to get girls any other way. The Mitchells made millions and spent them just as fast on women, cars, parties, drugs and so on until Artie, crazy from too much for too long, got out of control and everyone said to Jim, "Do something about him, will you?" The whole sordid tale was told much better by Hubner.

His titles include Jesus on Trial and The Doctrines of Grace. He was married to Linda Ann Boice, who continues to teach at the high school they co-founded.

Excellent explanations and solid theology!

It is a joy to read the works of the late James Boice. He was one of those teachers who not only had a passion for God's word and a solid grasp of theological doctrine, he also had an amazing ability to gently explain even the most difficult concepts in ways that are easily digestible. The Foundations of the Christian Faith is just another great example of this.

In the Parables of Jesus, James Boice takes a look at 22 parables spoken by our Lord, separating them into five different categories based on their main application. He groups them into parables of the Kingdom, parables of Salvation, parables of Wisdom and Folly, parables of the Christian Life, and parables of Judgment. He walks the reader through each parable, discussing the overall theme of the parable and then examining the details and meanings of the imagery used by the Lord in these instructive stories.

These parables were not new to me, and for most of them I had a pretty good idea what Jesus was teaching in His use of them. But even those parables I felt I already had a handle on, I gained additional insight into because of the sound exposition by Boice.

There were a couple of parables he explained that I thought I understood before, but that completely surprised me as he worked through them. One example of this in the third chapter of the book where he discusses the man who found the treasure buried in the field and the merchant who found the pearl of great value. That single chapter alone was worth the price of the book many times over for me as it actually helped me better understand the process involved in my own conversion!

And finally, of course, there were a few parables that had always been a little mysterious to me. This book helped shed some helpful light on those as well. The story of the persist widow and the unjust judge is a good example here, and he tied this parable to a neat story about George Mueller and the persistence of prayer in a way that was very encouraging.

All in all, I highly recommend this little gem of a book. I think there is a lot of value and worth tucked into this book, and the simplicity of the presentation in no way undermines the depth of the wisdom it elucidates. Without a doubt or a misgiving, I will be recommending it and sharing it with other believers in the faith.

Good for young and old

This book had a very positive theological impact on my life. In each chapter, James Boice tackles a different parable, relying on the gospels of Matthew and Luke.

Boice groups 22 of Christ's parables into those relating to kingdom, salvation, wisdom & folly, the Christian life, and judgment. He then summarizes and provides useful background information and commentary on each one.

The actual teachings of Christ himself plus the helpfully illuminating commentary by Boice gave me an enhanced understanding of Christ's will and encouraged me to draw closer to Him in appreciation for the peace and salvation He offers.

Highly recommend this book.

Boice offers little new and allows presuppositions flavor interpretation too strongly, imho.

While Boice is a popular author and many will enjoy his writing style, he offers little new. But if what you are looking for is homiletic gems, Boice is an exceptional choice on the parables. Boice is fairly easy for people to understand and keeps a reformed perspective. I certainly understand the many 4 and 5 star reviews, but in the remainder of this review I will attempt to explain my lower ranking.

All pastors and theologians will have their own theological persuasions and those always color their interpretations. How could they not? Still, as many within Boice's own camp are now letting Scriptures speak more in their context, it leaves Boice's work feeling dated and not very helpful.

As an example, I will use one of the parables in the book. Please note that I am not trying to dismiss a theology or an interpretation, but rather to give reason for my lower ranking. The reader can determine for himself/herself.

The parable of the Sower is the first parable Boice explains. He does well seeing out the basic issues. I like that he brings out that the "kingdom of God" is about God's rule. He then presupposes that the parable is about getting into heaven. He focuses on the 4 soils as 4 would-be believers and says the first 3 soils are not believers and the fourth is a believer. But nowhere in the parable is this mentioned. .. Not in the original parable, nor in Jesus' own interp. And with that homiletic maneuver, he has relegated the parable as not very applicable to believers. Obviously, the point of the parable is number four response, that much everybody gets. That is the only soil with fruit. Boice sees this too. But it is important that the sower and his actions are brought out. The point isn't who is and isn't saved, the point is who responds to God's rule and what God does and the specific results to the kingdom. Boice steals the impact of this powerful parable, imo.

Granted, Boice does come back and summarize what God does (he is not missing the whole picture, he is quite capable), but he doesn't connect it to this parable. Dissappointing, if your goal is to better understand the parables.

Do the last four sentences of Chapter 1 seem a bit contradictory to anyone else? He rightly points to God's ability...He even says we can't come to God. Then, at the end he says we can. Oh well, perhaps I just need to give him homiletic license. ..His preface does admit he didn't have much time to write the book.

If you are new to the parables, you may like his approach. Boice will give you answers. Are they correct, though?

If you want to go a little deeper, then you need to get something else. David Wenham's Parables of Jesus certainly has some strong points and is easy to follow. Still, he barely supports some of his fanciful interpretations. Hard to get excited. Pentecost does another nice introduction.

My 5 year old is really into garbage trucks and wants to be a "garbage truck driver" when he grows up. I thought this would be a good book for him, but it really didn't keep his interest too much. He read through it once or twice, but he's apparently more interested in the trucks than the people.

Ricky Fleet has been a lifelong horror fan ever since he was (almost) old enough to watch the original Romero trilogy. Those shambling horrors gave birth to an insatiable appetite that has yet to be sated. After spending years in the plumbing trade, he then decided to start teaching, passing on his knowledge to the next generation of engineers. Born and raised in the UK, cups of tea are a non-negotiable staple of the English life and serve as brain fuel for his first love, writing. Today he shares his time between his real life students, and the students of the zombie apocalypse in his first series: Hellspawn. At least the fictional students do as they’re told. Most of the time anyway.

A Unique Zombie Tale

Zombie stories are a dime a dozen and in order for a book to stand out in my mind, it has to not only be different, it has to be very different. Hellspawn fits the bill. There is no zombie virus scientists are trying to find a cure for. Hellspawn sees the dead rising from the graveyards and by the time science can try to come up with an answer, it’s already too late.

The book follows the Taylors, a family in Portsmouth, England, trying to survive hell on earth. The family is not perfect and they certainly don’t have all the answers. They are realistically flawed which makes you cheer for them when they succeed and feel horrible when they fail. Not only do the Taylors have to face zombies, they have to fight against other humans, the worst kind of humans, just to survive.

For a first novel, Hellspawn is a solid piece of zombie fiction. I only discovered a couple of small mistakes while reading, showing this author took the time to hire a great editor, a step many new authors need to take. The story flows well and releases many emotions in the reader, and with a second book in the works, Ricky Fleet has a winner on his hands.

Oh, keep an eye out for Mrs. Humes. I think you’ll love her. I know I did and if the author kills her, I will have to fly to England to inflict bodily harm.

Overall, Hellspawn is a fast-paced thrill thrill ride that is just unique enough to stand out from the crowd.

great twist on the zombe genre

The first I heard of this book from a good friend of mine. She told me I had to read, so I did . Boy I was glad I listened to her . I couldn't put this book down . It is such a good twist on the zombie tale . Showing us how the beginning of the apocalypse and how one family stayed alive .

The author has taken the zombie apocalypse and put a fresh twist on it . He took a day in the lives of one family and basically put them through hell as they try and stay alive . But guess what all the evil things in this world aren't the undead, there are people that are still alive that are wanting to hurt them. I couldn't believe some of the things this poor family went through, the perils are great and the tension is so thick . You want them to survive so much , you are cheering for them with every thing they defeat .

The characters are so complex and so flawed at the same time . There is a story within the story of here . What would you do if you were trapped in the apocalypse with your school bully? What would you do when you have some father / son unresolved emotions that are simmering at the surface? What would you do when you feel utter despair when you have to keep your family safe and alive? These questions are all answered with these characters. Kurt is your everyday man, who works hard for a living . When he has to keep his family safe, you see him take control and help everyone one out. I have to say my all time favorite character is Mrs. Humes , she is one gutsy lady and the way she handles herself is what I want when I grow up. She also adds a bit of comic relief when things are getting way to tense. She is a sweet character that I hope and pray makes it all the way through.

This book had me screaming one moment then bawling my eyes out in the next . There is one part in the book that I could hardly read because the tears were streaming down my face. It was so sad all I could do was ugly cry. I was sitting on the edge of my chair most of the time and the other times I had the blanket pulled over my head. I cheered with every inventive way they came up with to kill the masses . Some of them were very ingenious and who knew that a table and nails would be such a good tool. The sign of a great book is how many emotions that a person goes through when reading . Mr. Fleet brought out those emotions with great ease. You are taken on a ride with so many twists and turns. Ultimately this a story of survival and one family's love for each other and what they would do to be safe . I can't wait till book two . So if you want a fresh twist on the start of the zombie apocalypse and one family's survival . Check it out you won't be disappointed .

Gore, Action, Romero style Zombies, Family Drama ! The best zombie book in a long time !
I am a fan of the Zombie genre, i read manny of the books that are out there and i tell you that Hellspawn has the potential to stand next to the bigges and most loved series of the genre.
This book has a few of the most bloody and gore filled scenes that i ever read. You can alsmost smell the putrid Zombies, and the emerald green blood of the infected that try to reach the stranded Family and just wants to sinck there teeth into the juicy flesh of the living.
It is not only that the book is filled with action, zombies and gore, and that your heart will skip a beat a few times, and you will hope that everything will be all right . This book also looks into the more complex family relationships, the love and feeling of competition btw father and son, the love of a husband for hs wife and family.
I also find it cool that the action is located in the UK, so there are no fire weapons available in each household, and the Taylor Family has to be inventive in order to survive.
I can't wait for the Sequel!
