It is intended for general readers; even the scientific topics are written with the interest of a general reader in mind. The unique feature of the book is that history and international politics have been combined with natural resources for the first time under one title. Original pictures from the scene aid in understanding the conundrum. Most of the material in this book came directly from the author’s interaction with ordinary Afghans, government officials and most importantly US and NATO military personnel working in Afghanistan. More emphasis has been placed on the southern part of the country where the Taliban insurgency is strong and where the civilian infrastructure is non-existent. Over the course of his research for this book, Dr. Yousafzai was starkly reminded of the fact that most military and civilian personnel have no idea why the Afghans behave the way they do. Ironically, most military officials also have no clue why they are there in the first place! Regardless of their knowledge of the Afghan quagmire, he salutes their dedication to the invaluable service they have been providing since the war began in late 2001. The book is divided into three parts detailing the history of the Afghan war; the present scenario and whether the country’s future can be predicted by looking at its bloody history. What kind of lessons the US/NATO officials learned from the Afghan adventure have been detailed throughout the book. As a native Pashtun, Dr. Yousafzai grew up in Peshawar and witnessed the rise and fall of military dictatorships, religious extremism and the plight of ordinary Pashtuns across the Durand Line. The first part of the book describes some of those experiences which are a direct result of his 20 years of working experience in the Afghanistan-Pakistan region. The second part of the book summarizes the untapped mineral wealth of Afghanistan and the efforts to control its natural resources. Situation on the ground is discussed in some detail in the third part of the book along with a roadmap towards the uncertain future.

About the Author
The author is a geoscience professional and has worked in the South and Central Asian regions for the past 20 years. He received his B.S. degree from University of Peshawar in 1993 and a Ph.D. degree from Kent State University in 2005. Dr. Yousafzai has developed a deep understanding of the region from cultural, linguistic, ethnic, geographic, geologic and religious perspectives. He has published numerous articles on the natural resources of Afghanistan and Pakistan. He is an amateur photographer and an avid traveler. Excellent read

Excellent work! I have to be honest, I don't read much Non fiction books about my country, perhaps growing up in that region abstains me from even looking back. But I loved reading about some of my history again!
If you want to understand whats going on in Afghanistan and surrounding areas, this is the book you need.When reading this book and coming up to the contemporary parts about Russian occupation, the civil war and the upcoming of the Taliban movement it became clear what went so desperately wrong for the Afghan state and its people and "what will happen" as per author's prediction.

Inspired writing and chilling facts, I would recommend it to EVERYONE.

The only realistic guide to building muscle

I have owned Steiner's book for nearly 30 years. During that time I have seen and read many "body building" books which purport to give the definitive answer to how to build muscle. Most of the current books are filled with pictures of professional body builders who are wild exceptions to normal people both in the time devoted to training and the techniques used (drugs, dehydration, dangerous diets). Steiner's formulas simply work, and they work at home without expensive equipment. Among Steiner's sound advice is the use of 1" standard plates which better fit in homes and apartments, concentrating on the major muscle groups and avoiding the silly little exercises that work each finger, following the workout formula (a squatting movement of some kind, a pressing movement of some kind, a heavy back building movement of some kind, and at least two other major muscle group exercises, but never more than nine exercises), limiting sets to two for most people. With these techniques you will avoid injury and be able to maintain fitness for your entire life, not just in your twenties. At one point over the year's I believed that Steiner's abdominal routine was outdated and supplanted by the high repetition and light weight formulas. However, I have come back to Steiner's basic formula, low reps, heavy weights for all muscle groups, even abs. Sometimes the number of repetitions Steiner recommends for various exercises can be confusing. But this becomes clear when you understand he recommends different numbers of repetitions for beginners, normal routines and shaping routines. The only sad part is that this wonderful book is no longer in print.

Follow Brad's instructions if you want to build muscle

I read Bradley's articles in the old Iron Man and Muscular Development magazines and for the first time in my lift actually began to build muscles and strength. He is the most honest writer in the field. If you can find a copy of this book, or any of his old weight training articles from the 1970's, grab them and do what he says.

Most people over-train. The whole idea of progressive resistance exercise is to overload your muscles, then rest long enough for them to recover... and a little bit longer so that they can overcompensate and become stronger in order to handle the load you place on them.

If you are not making satisfactory progress, try doing less.

If you REALLY want to know the correct way to train with weights to obtain results-this book is a sure thing! Published,originally 40 years ago by Bradley Steiner,this manual will bring you very satisfying results in weight training! It is pure,honest,sincere instruction in using barbells and dumbbells to achieve muscles and strength! I would by far recommend this book over Arnold's Encyclpedia anyday!

Come on guys -- you need some proof readers -- BIG TIME!

The overall choice of cases seems appropriate, but man are there a lot of mistakes! I would say every 5-10 cases, the answers to the multiple choice questions do not match the discussion -- causes a bit of confusion while studying for the boards, and it doesn't lend a whole lot of trust to what they are saying when I need to double check everything.

I purchased the book in March 2016 and there were no typos errors in my version. I was actively looking for them after reading that last review. Anyway, I suspected the publisher proofread the latest prints. Anyway, this new edition is excellent at integrating physics into the cases and providing multiple choice questions just like the real test! This is great way to review these concepts for the new ABR exam.
