The Catalyst (Targon Tales Book 1), by Chris Reher

It's no easy tour of duty for Lt. Nova Whiteside when her interstellar transport is taken by pirates and she is then tagged for termination. Could it have something to do with the mysterious alien they were transporting? Having gone from merely MIA to technically AWOL, any chance of escape leaves her no choice but to rely on Sethran Kada, a former lover, for help.

Unfortunately, she realizes that they are now on opposite sides of an escalating war between the Commonwealth Union of Planets and an increasingly dangerous rebel organization.

In trying to find who is threatening her life, they discover a plot to destroy a distant planet - a world inhabited by creatures that are the key to Nova's survival - and a conspiracy that threatens the stability of the Union Commonwealth.

Can Nova go beyond her strict military training to cooperate with people whom she is sworn to destroy?

"The characterizations are solid, the writing is crisp and fluid, and all of the questions posed within the story are answered. Reher is a great storyteller, and you know they know this from the confidence exhibited in the book."

"What a fascinating imagination Chris Reher has! ... descriptions of all the other worldly beings was a fun mind exercise along with rather exciting adventures. Read it! It is worth the time!"

5 Stars for the prequel "The Catalyst" by Chris Reher.
By Amazon Customer
Nova, a young lieutenant still sees in shades of black and white. She is just a soldier pilot trying to make a name for herself out from under her father's shadow. She unwittingly becomes a pawn in a dark, and dangerous game to save a world despite the intentions of those who would take advantage. Can she outwit her foes in time? Can she trust an old flame? Can she learn to see shades of gray in time to survive?

I received an ARC for an honest review. This was a fantastic start to Chris Reher's series. It is action packed, fast paced, and full of zest for life. This prequel fills in history that her first book in the series "Only Human" alludes to, in a rich and satisfying manner. It is shorter, but in no way less stout in terms of quality. I am a large fan of science fiction and fantasy and this certainly delivers it in spades. Technology, aliens, galaxies, plots, and human interest. It's in there!

Chris Reher - a great storyteller
By MsTee
Though The Catalyst's timeline precedes that of 'Only Human,' I read the latter first. Even so, it was not hard for me to follow the story. In The Catalyst, we see Nova, wet behind the ears from her birth into the military scene. She's as inflexible, stubborn, and by-the-book as a true 'greenie,' and it takes a rough patch in her career, and the handsome Seth (an old flame of Nova's) to show her that the occasional bending of the rules isn't so bad after all.

Reher does not waste time or drag their feet. From the beginning, we're thrown into action and adventure, watching as Nova battles with doubts concerning those she cares about, and also those she should trust within her work organization. The story moves along fast, but there are times when it slows and we get to enjoy and appreciate the fascinating world and its people Reher has created. The underlying cause for which Nova, Seth, and their comrades fight is very positive, and I greatly enjoyed that Reher pushes their characters to make certain sacrifices to attempt to achieve this goal.

My only gripe:
I loved reading Seth and Nova's relationship, and I felt that the author could have expanded a bit more on them at the end of the book. Of course, not everyone will agree with me on this one.

The characterizations are solid, the writing is crisp and fluid, and all of the questions posed within the story are answered. Reher is a great storyteller, and you know they know this from the confidence exhibited in the book. I enjoyed reading this immensely and fully believe that others will, too.

Space romance
By smithster
I thought this and the other two in the Nova Whiteside series, Only Human and Rebel Alliances, were a lot of fun. Although our female protagonist is a relatively high ranking and experience military officer, she does spend quite a bit of time being rescued and oggled by brawny, gorgeous men, and having good sex too, which I appreciate :) But while the relationship between her and her male costars is central to the story, it doesn't completely sidetrack it, which I also appreciate. The story itself is frontier politics - big and powerful alliances verses terrorist separatists - and there's plenty of playing around in space ships and on strange planets with stranger scenery to keep things interesting and moving outside of the romance department. This is the Star Wars school of character development - good guys tend to be good, bad guys tend to be bad, but here and there Reher did play with these expectations in her supporting cast, which made them more interesting. Enjoyable, and I will read the next one.
