The World in Six Songs: How the Musical Brain Created Human Nature, by Daniel Levitin

The author of the New York Times bestseller This Is Your Brain on Music reveals music's role in the evolution of human culture-and "will leave you awestruck" (The New York Times)

Daniel J. Levitin's astounding debut bestseller, This Is Your Brain on Music, enthralled and delighted readers as it transformed our understanding of how music gets in our heads and stays there. Now in his second New York Times bestseller, his genius for combining science and art reveals how music shaped humanity across cultures and throughout history.

Dr. Levitin identifies six fundamental song functions or types-friendship, joy, comfort, religion, knowledge, and love-then shows how each in its own way has enabled the social bonding necessary for human culture and society to evolve. He shows, in effect, how these "six songs" work in our brains to preserve the emotional history of our lives and species.

Dr. Levitin combines cutting-edge scientific research from his music cognition lab at McGill University and work in an array of related fields; his own sometimes hilarious experiences in the music business; and illuminating interviews with musicians such as Sting and David Byrne, as well as conductors, anthropologists, and evolutionary biologists. The World in Six Songs is, ultimately, a revolution in our understanding of how human nature evolved-right up to the iPod.

From Publishers Weekly
Charles Darwin meets the Beatles in this attempt to blend neuroscience and evolutionary biology to explain why music is such a powerful force. In this rewarding though often repetitious study by bestselling author Levitin (This Is Your Brain on Music), a rock musician turned neuroscientist, argues that music is a core element of human identity, paving the way for language, cooperative work projects and the recording of our lives and history. Through his studies, Levitin has identified six kinds of songs that help us achieve these goals: songs of friendship, joy, comfort, knowledge, religion and love. He cites lyrics ranging from the songs of Johnny Cash to work songs, which, he says, promote feelings of togetherness. According to Levitin, evolution may have selected individuals who were able to use nonviolent means like dance and music to settle disputes. Songs also serve as memory-aids, as records of our lives and legends. Some may find Levitin's evolutionary explanations reductionist, but he lightens the science with personal anecdotes and chats with Sting and others, offering an intriguing explanation for the power of music in our lives as individuals and as a society. From Bookmarks Magazine
Fans that have read This Is Your Brain on Music are in for another treat; newcomers to Levitin will still find much to enjoy in this consideration of music and human civilization. Levitin writes with both knowledge of neuroscience and evolutionary biology and a deep appreciation for the musician’s craft—one that will resound loudly with musicophiles. The New York Times Book Review, however, questioned some of Levitin’s “unprovable” scientific claims, and others faulted him for taking a reductionist view of evolution, shamelessly namedropping, cherry-picking songs from a select era, and failing to edit a verbose tome. Despite such flaws, most readers will find something to connect with in the book—even if it’s just one song.

How Joni Mitchell and Pete Seeger Created Human Nature
By Amazon Customer
Daniel J. Levitin, a former record executive turned neuroscientist, pals around with David Byrne, Sting, Joni Mitchell and other celebrities in a book whose purpose is to define the six architypal songs of the human race. The chapters are titled for one of the six types, with an additional chapter for love songs. The content of each chapter is a haphazard collection of autobiographical anecdotes, interviews, evidence from anthropology, and examples from his and his colleagues research. Beyond straight forward declarations of what makes the chapters's song type an archetype , most of the material provides little evidence or even a compelling reason to be included in the chapter.

Each chapter includes uninspiring song examples that seem to undermine his claim of significance. Mr Levitin apologies for this in the final chapter claiming the examples are provided for a common frame of reference and are not meant to represent the best of the genre. If great examples are so hard to come by, what makes these categories more than arbitrary?

This seems most evident in the chapter on religious songs. When composers like Bach have spent their entire career writing religious music, is Leon Russell's Superstar performed by Carpenter's the most worthy mention? How is a study of Arcade Fire lyrics pertinent while Handel's Messiah mearly gets mentioned by name?

Levitin stresses how little difference there is between humans and the rest of the animal kingdom. He fails to show that the musical brain he attributes to humans is an important distinction.

The World in Six Songs, by Daniel Levitin
By A2900
This is an enjoyable, very interesting and thought-provoking book by someone who knows music from both the commercial/industry and scientific sides. Levitin advances a number of ideas, based largely on science, but which really amount to conjecture -- he doesn't posit them, but he repeats them often enough that it is clear that he really believes them. I found a number of these ideas to be plausible but not necessarily convincing. This is not a criticism, but rather to say that I have other ideas and/or am not so sure that his conjectures are right. Indeed, some of these ideas seem downright simplistic.

More of a criticism -- though this may be a criticism of me, not Levitin -- is that he extensively makes references to contemporary popular music and musicians to give examples of what he is writing. Being raised on classical music, I found most of these examples useless.

I haven't read it, but, from what I have heard, another of Levitin's books, "This Is Your Brain on Music," sounds like a better and more scientifically based book. I intend to read it next.

Interesting ideas, but far too long for them
By Legis
Not nearly as good as "This is your brain on music". Although the core ideas are very interesting, the book should be much shorter. The author delves into too many and too long personal stories to go to the point.

Eva (Eve Spanish Edition): Una Novela (Atria Espanol), by WM. Paul Young

This book sometimes was a bit confusing, but always held your interest..it wasn't until late in the book that you really begin to understand and grasp the true meanings of the many metaphors. A great spiritual guide...hard to always remember and put into practice the main lesson, but its important we try.

In the last five years, interest in them and their potential to help staffing and development efforts has increased dramatically among our client group. We believe this interest will continue to grow over the next few years due to three key, related trends-intensified competition, aggressive cost management and downsizing, and the proliferation of 360-degree feedback system (A. D. Lucia & R. Lepsinger / Preface xiii)."
In this invaluable study authors
* define what a competency model is, describe its components, and discuss some of their broad, general applications.
* examine how competency models can be applied within selection, training and development, appraisal, and succession planning systems to support an organization's business objectives.
* discuss establishing the performance criteria with which your organization measures success to better focus your data collection and analysis.
* describe specific action steps to follow during the development of the competency model from scratch.
* discuss various methods of data collection and how they can be used to increase the likelihood of identifying the knowledge, skills, and characteristics required to succeed in the job.
* describe the process of creating competency-based selection, training and development, appraisal, and succession planning systems.
* discuss the methods for converting the model into the necessary formats or tools to integrate the competencies into each step of human resource management.
This study is a "must" reading guide for HR professionals and line managers. I highly recommend.

Very readable overview
By Miriam Lawrence
This is a perfect choice for the novice reader who is trying to get a basic understanding of the whys and wherefores of compentency models. It's very readable book and not nearly as dry as I might have expected. In particular, the authors' copious use of real-world examples, cases and models is extremely helpful. I even got some great ideas for project management that I'll be able to apply broadly in my work, regardless of whether or not my organization undertakes a competency modeling project.
My only criticism is that the book focuses exclusively on CMs in a HRM context; there is no real discussion of industry-scale models, which was my main reason for reading the book. Nevertheless, a very good resource for a beginner.

A good coverage of the field of competency models
By Amazon Customer
Competency Models have become a must for an up-to-date HRM system - I have been helping companies to build this kind of models since 1996. These models make great tools for selection, training and development, appraisal and succession planning. Unfortunately, until I came accross this book, I found that most of the reference works to this field are quite unaccessible, not the kind I would put into the hands of a newcomer. This is a practical book, showing why competency models are important and helping the reader to go through the complete process of setting up such a system, including a chapter on how to sell the idea to others in the organisation - I wish some of the people I work with would have read this book before, that would have smoothened the problems that are caused if these steps aren't followed well. The book also shows how to transform your competence model into a 360° feedback questionnaire. It was the first time I came accross a book explaining how to do that! The only area that I found a bit weak is the compentency-interview (both for building the model, als doing behavior-based interviews for recruiting), but maybe that's a bias coming from my own expertise in that domain (my book "7 Steps to Emotional Intelligence" includes a full chapter on how to ask the right questions).
Conclusion - whether you know about Competency Models or not - add this book to your library! And if you are a consultant in the field of competency models, this is a book you might recommend to your customers.

John Logie Baird: The Man Who Invented Television, by Bob Greenlee

John Logie Baird is someone whose name is virtually unknown to most Americans.  He was a gifted Scotsman who managed to perfect the world’s first working television system.

Baird announced his invention while living in Great Britain in 1924 and a year later provided a well-publicized public demonstration of his mechanical television system at a famous London department store.  The general public, both in the United States and in Europe, was just beginning to appreciate how radio was fast becoming an important part of their everyday lives.  Now they learned that someone had perfected a way that both sound as well as pictures could be sent directly into their homes.

In 1927, Baird was able to transmit television signals clear across the Atlantic Ocean from London to New York.  Only 25 years before, Guglielmo Marconi sent coded wireless messages across the same ocean, which at the time, was universally hailed as a technological milestone that would literally change the world.

A Lonely Pioneer
By Malcolm Keen
This gives an exrensive account of a rather lonely man who was one of the pioneers of television but unfortnately, like his counterpart, Philo Farnsworth, was too lonely to listen to the wisdom of others early enough in his work. He became entranced by his own solutions to the technical problems without taking a broader view of what the technology might and should be. The book could have benefitted from more editing (Sydenham, for example, is not near Hyde Park) but the tale is one which was worth telling.

Boomer Nation: The Largest and Richest Generation Ever, and How It Changed America, by Steve Gillon

The Baby Boomers, born between 1946 and 1964, form the single largest demographic spike in American history. Never before or since have birth rates shot up and remained so high so long, with some obvious results: when the Boomers were kids, American culture revolved around families and schools; when they were teenagers, the United States was wracked by rebelliousness; now, as mature adults, the Boomers have led America to become the richest and most powerful country in the history of the world.

Boomer Nation will for the first time offer an incisive look into this generation that has redefined America's culture in so many ways, from women's rights and civil rights to religion and politics. Steve Gillon combines firsthand reporting of the lives of six Boomers and their families with a broad look at postwar American history in a fascinating mix of biography and history. His characters, like America itself, reflect a variety of heritages: rich and poor, black and white, immigrant and native born. Their lives take very different paths, yet are shaped by key events and trends in similar ways. They put a human face on the Boomer generation, showing what it means to grow up amid widespread prosperity, with an explosion of democratic autonomy that led to great upheavals but also a renewal from below of our churches, industries, and even the armed forces.

The same generation dismissed as pampered and selfish has led a revival of religion in America; the same generation that unleashed the women's movement has also shifted our politics into its most market-oriented, anti-governmental era since Woodrow Wilson. Gillon draws many lessons from this "generational history" -- above all, that the Boomers have transformed America from the security- and authority-seeking culture of their parents to the autonomy- and freedom-rich world of today.

When the "greatest generation" was young and not yet at war, it was widely derided as selfish and spoiled. Only in hindsight, long after the sacrifices of World War II, did it gain its sterling reputation. Today, as Boomer America rises to the challenges of the war on terror, we may be on the cusp of a reevaluation of the generation of Presidents Bush and Clinton. That generation has helped make America the richest, strongest nation on the planet, and as Gillon's book proves, it has had more influence on the rest of us than any other group.

Boomer Nation is an eye-opening reinterpretation of the past six decades.

From Publishers Weekly
The historian/host of the History Channel's History Center, Gillion chronicles post-WWII America through the lives of six boomers who represent different strands of baby boom cultureâ€"which Gillon asserts has become synonymous with American culture. Four of his subjects have achieved national prominence: Bobby Muller, who founded Vietnam Veterans of America; lawyer and cancer survivor Fran Visco, who became president of the National Breast Cancer Coalition; Marshall Herskovitz, developer of the seminal television series Thirtysomething; and architect Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, who created the avant-garde Florida community of Seaside. Together with Donny Deutsch, a self-made advertising mogul, and Alberta Wilson, who overcame substance abuse and poverty to become a Christian educator, they provide the focus for a look at the Vietnam War, the women's movement and the attraction of some boomers to fundamentalist religion. What Gillon uniquely accomplishes is to illuminate how pervasive boomer influence continues to be in the 21st century. He touches on iconic events and influencesâ€"Catch-22, Woodstock, the Cold War, the assassinations of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther Kingâ€"but he is refreshingly unnostalgic about them. Gillon makes especially interesting points when exploring the continuity from the boomers to Gen X (born between 1965 and 1976) and Gen Y (1977â€"1995). His assessment of the boomer is generally favorableâ€"boomers did not abandon their core values of self-reliance, entitlement and idealism, but have applied those values to the changing challenges they have faced. The result, he says, is that "we are all boomers now."

From Booklist
"The Baby Boom would prove to be the single greatest demographic event in American history--more significant, even, than the staggering loss of life during the Civil War," insists this academic and television host, who focuses on those born between 1947 and 1957 rather than 1946 and 1964. He contends that there is a common thread running through this generation that constitutes 29 percent of the population, but at the same time he recognizes the great differences in backgrounds, unique personal crises, conservatives, liberals, political independents, churchgoers, and others. They are today's decision makers in boardrooms and government. To tell the story of this generation, the author profiles six individuals whose experiences reflect the broad themes of the age: television, advertising, religion, architecture, feminism, and the Vietnam War. Harsh reality has had a profound effect on this generation, being raised on expectations of the good life and "having it all." This tale of the boomers who reshaped America is fascinating. Engaging and rigorous
By Matthew Gleick
Although there's little debate that baby boomers transformed America in important ways, there are surprisingly few books that try to analyze in meaningful ways what the boomers actually did and what it means, in the first place, to talk about the Baby Boom as a distinct generation. Gillon rectifies that with this book, which uses the stories of six different boomers of dramatically different social and cultural backgrounds to illuminate the experience of a generation.
Needless to say, the people we now call boomers were hardly all alike, and there were all sorts of ties -- ethnic, religious, professional -- that connected them more closely to people in other generations than to people in their own. But Gillon convincingly shows how the demographic realities of the boom shaped the lives of nearly everyone in it, and had a deep-seated cultural impact that was hard to escape. This is a sharp work of history, rigorous in the way it approaches problems but thoroughly entertaining in in its storytelling.

Eye Candy
By D. Giesen
Boomer Nation is interesting. It is a compelling read only because it is extremely well written and takes a group of lives and walks them through the late 1940s to 2000. The book's strength is a journalistic technique called "personification," where a writer takes dull statistics and uses anecdotal information to illustrate hard numbers.

That's a wonderful idea, if you have the data to back up why you chose who you chose for the anecdotes. Author Gillon was incredibly shallow in presenting hard data to back up why he selected to profile the people he did. Only one couple, two architects whose urban concepts featured "Back to the Future Design," was apparent for why they were there.

The book takes a diverse array of, primarily, easterners and uses biographical sketches to illustrate everything from Vatican II to the women's movement to the lost decade of the 1970s, when America seemed to ignore the fact it had a drug, booze and vision problem.

Why these people were choosen was never clear. They just, frankly, appear. While they represent different themes of the last 50 years, most are extremes. What's lost in the discussion is why there people are better examples of their generation than, say, Bill Clinton, or, for that matter, me!

In summary, the book is well written but poor documentation makes a potentially good book at best mediocre.

Reads good, but doesn't describe the people I know.
By Lynn H. Carrier
Gillon writes with an exciting and entertainly style. I enjoyed reading it, as much as I enjoy someone like Neil Gaiman. Neil writes good fiction and he entertains me. Gillon writes entertaining non-fiction, but it's not representative of most of us.

For someone, like myself, from the boomer generation, the people he selected as examples could not have been more different than me or any of the people my age. One fellow sold a business for $270 million. A woman obtained her PhD. Another woman spearheaded a successful campaign for breast cancer. Another fellow has several successful TV shows. I don't know people like that. I don't drink beer with them. They have success in their lives that only 1 in 10,000 people find, maybe more. They are celebrities.

I couldn't relate to real life people he talked about. Sorry, but I couldn't connect the changes in America with what these 4 people did with their lives either.

The people I know, work, pay their bills, worry about raising their children, and how they will get along after they retire. During the last 30 years, the people Gillon didn't talk about, struggled to get a good education, get a good job, keep the job, and hold their marriage together. They are in debt up to their eyeballs. Gillon's characters were building billion dollar businesses, getting PhD's, meeting the President, or having their TV shows on a national network.

Good for them, I am happy for them, but no one I know has any experience living a charmed life these people have.

I hope Gillon makes lots of money and becomes famous, because that is what he admires.

I hope my family loves me, I set a good example in my neighbor hood, and I can help someone along their way.

Different strokes for different folks, as they say.

Ingrid Law delivers another heartwarming story about the magic of friendship and the power of family in this companion to her Newbery Honor winning Savvy

Gypsy Beaumont has always been a whirly-twirly free spirit, so as her thirteenth birthday approaches, she hopes to get a magical ability that will let her fly, or dance up to the stars. Instead, she wakes up on her birthday with blurry vision . . . and starts seeing flashes of the future and past. But when Momma and Poppa announce that her very un-magical, downright mean Grandma Pat has Alzheimer’s and is going to move in with them, Gypsy’s savvy—along with her family’s—suddenly becomes its opposite. Now it’s savvy mayhem as Gypsy starts freezing time, and no one could have predicted what would happen on their trip to bring Grandma Pat home  . . . not even Gypsy.

With her trademark style and whimsical, beautiful language, Ingrid Law has written another wonderfully moving companion to her Newbery Honor winning Savvy.

Gr 4–7—Another magical tale that emphasizes every person's unique gifts. Some years have passed in the Beaumont household, in which each family member has a "savvy," or magical ability that manifests itself around age 13. Now it is Gypsy's turn, but her savvy for seeing flashes of the past and future causes her more anxiety than happiness. A vision of her Grandma Pat falling off a clock tower terrifies her, and she determines to prevent it. Worse yet, the curmudgeonly woman has Alzheimer's and will come live with the Beaumonts. This dreaded event has switched everyone's gifts. Gypsy now stops time, her brother Tucker can grow, brother Samson can start fires, and their perfect mother now is clumsy and accident prone. Navigating the new reality, saving Grandma, and accepting her savvy are on Gypsy's to-do list. Law's signature writing style is evident in her third story; whimsical word patterns dance around her savvy characters. Gypsy and her family seem to be in constant, unusual motion, rather like a Willy Wonka elevator. And, much like authors Deborah Wiles or Patricia Reilly Giff, Law contrasts warm family support with personal despair and hardship, nicely balancing her dramatic action with stability and optimism. Gypsy's family will always love her, even if she sends a car into the river (oops). There are a few coincidences and a tidy ending, but overall, Law has again told a story with as much heart as creativity. VERDICT Highly recommended and a must-have for libraries with the previous volumes.—Caitlin Augusta, Stratford Library Association, CT

Great third book!!!
By freehope
Great third book! I admit I only glanced at the beginning of the second book and never finished it because it didn't grab my attention like the first book. This one is reminiscent of the first book, in a good way. Gypsy's character development was believable and surprisingly sophisticated yet easy enough for the target audience (middle school readers) to understand. I also appreciated all of the secondary characters - I felt connected to all of them, even the ones who only make a brief appearance. It is impressive that the author is able to create such great characters and develop the relationships so deeply in a relatively short book. I took off one star only because it was a bit predictable and certain parts seemed a little too similar to the first book, but otherwise a fun read!

Good book for young readers
By E. Ervin
Another great book for students to enjoy. It makes me just a little sad that I am no longer a school librarian so I could present this book to my kids. I know they would love it. This is the kind of book that helps to create life long readers. The story is interesting and a bit unusual. I enjoyed reading it and will do my best to share it with some young readers. I liked the magic aspects of the book very much. This book absolutely belongs in a school library and the children's section of public libraries. It is really good.

Maci and Zoe's Review: A sweet coming of age story
By Maci and Zoe Read Books
A long time ago I read the beginning of this trilogy, Savvy and Scumble. I was happy to see that there was another one, even though it had been quite a few years in-between. In that time, I felt I had grown out of the age appropriate level for this book, but I could not help reading it, because I remembered how much I liked Savvy. Gypsy has an unusual family, where everybody gets a savvy, a special power, on their thirteenth birthday. But what Gypsy got is not what she had hoped for, and as things get even worse, such as having her grumpy grandma move in with them, things end up switched. As everything that happens starts developing in uncharted territories, even Gypsy's parents cannot help. I found this book to be a sweet coming of age story, it is definitely for someone younger then me. One thing that I did not like about this book was how stressful it was to read. It was one of those books where the characters spend the whole time trying to prevent something, which can be very stressful and frustrating for the reader. Overall, I give this book four stars because it book is good, it just is not great.
